I am looking for advice on a salary range. I have no clue at all what to start at and didn’t know if anyone here had an opinion. I will put most of the details behind the cut. Basically, it is a construction job. My position is admin assistant/project engineer.

The longer version…

My current title with the company I am working for is administrative assistant on a large construction project. Because of the nature of the business, I am a contract employee. I make $25K per year and do not get any benefits.

While my official title is admin asst., I do that as well as PE things like submittals, notices to comply, punchlist, etc. Things that were given to me because I could handle it and because they were giving me more experience.

I work with people who are contracted from other companies and have been talking with one about coming under his company. My motive is to get a decent salary and benefits. This looks like it is going to happen.. He has told me that on any other job, I would be a PE. We are scheduled to negotiate Monday. Naturally, I hope he throws out a number first to give me an idea, but I don’t expect that and want to be prepared. I don’t see why I couldn’t get at least $30K, but I don’t know if that is too low.

Other indicators…the job is in St. Louis. I have an AS in engineering, a BS in computer science, and am near finished with an MS in engineering management. I know that other admin assts (solely doing that job) on this project are making $28-$35K, but some of them have been doing this for years (I have been here for 2.5 years). Do any of you have any opinions on what salary I should shoot for? I know that I shouldn’t make a PE’s salary, but am I wrong to think I should be on the high end of an admin salary?

Thanks for any input.
