Can I substitute olive oil for vegetable oil in cooking? (I'm making brownies, if it matters.)

If not, are there any other substitutes? The recipe calls for 1/2 a cup of vegetable oil.

Edit: Thanks for your suggestions. As I didn't have canola oil either, I ended up calling my father and he said to use butter. (Yes, I do realize that's a heart attack in a bite.) They're still in the oven, but they smell like brownies!
