We have a Saint Bernard. Great dog, etc etc. BUT, he likes to go out back at night and bark a ton at shadows. The neighbors (with their new born) aren't fans of this, so before bed we put up a gate at the top of the stairs to the basement to prevent him from getting out of the dog door. We remove it in the morning. He CAN knock the gate over (he's huge), but typically doesn't because he ackowledges why it's there and unless he has a peeing emergency it stays up. Peeing emergencies are rare and he's very house-broken.

Well, a peeing emergency last week broke the gate.

My husband is terrified that if we use the metal plate that slides in the dog door to keep it closed off, our dog will think the dog door "Doesn't work" and will "forget" how to use the dog door and we'll suddenly have peeing issues.

I think that as long as Baloo SEES us put the plate in at night and remove it in the morning, it'll be a non-issue.

Any of you have experience with this?
