If a college is having huge problems as a result of drinking at frat parties, do you think it is justified for them to ban alcohol at those parties? Or should they just try to educate about responsible drinking?

What do you think of schools who have done away with the Greek system altogether, as a way to prevent the problems it causes?

My college has just instituted an alcohol ban at Greek events, and a lot of people think it's not the right approach. I'm normally all for rehabilitation and education, but the Greek system is kind of out-of-control. Most recently, the police had to break up a large frat party because of multiple fights and people who drank themselves into unconsciousness, and a drunk driver coming from a frat party hit a girl who was waiting for the bus outside of one of the dorms. Also, there was a hazing incident in which a pledge was shot 30 times at point-blank range with a BB gun.

In my opinion (backed up by the experiences of friends who have gotten caught drinking in the dorms), alcohol education doesn't do a lot of good. People don't take it seriously; they treat it as a joke and ignore it. Personally, I don't see what purpose the Greek system serves, anyway, and wouldn't be terribly upset if it was banned from this school. However, I'm not really involved in it, so I'd like to hear from other people to make sure I'm not judging too harshly.
