Car concerns

My "check engine" light has been on for weeks, but the car sounds and drives fine.

I took it to the mechanic this morning and they said there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the car and that the light is on because of "vapor loss in gas tank".

What does this mean in terms of getting it fixed and whether it's a horrendously expensive problem?

I'm guessing that if there were something major going on, the garage would have quite happily informed me. I've gassed up a couple of times since the light went on, and double-checked to make sure the gas cap is on tightly and all.
