Why did evolution design menstruation the way it is? If there aren't any significant health side effects to absorbing the menstrual fluid back into your body, why wouldn't evolution have made things work that way?

All of the added hormonal mechanisms that manipulate it, accompanied by a whole bunch of other side effects, are ridiculous.

It seems to me that there is a lot of needless pain and inconvenience from menstruation. Then again, evolution has screwed up in a bunch of ways that it hasn't yet corrected, and probably won't now that we are medicating the problems.

So is there any research at all into developing something exclusively for the purpose of halting menstruation to minimize side effects (i.e. NOT estrogen and progestin based)? BCP (estrogen+progestin) based methods have their own set of side effects, which is why I'm asking about an alternative.

EDIT: For evolution, I propose an alternative:
Create one way hole to bleed into your poop chute and poop out at will.

Fix'd.
