I bought my dog a new collar recently at a local pet store. I used it for the first time yesterday at the park, and the buckle part broke and my dog ran off by himself. I chased him for 10 minutes as he is very fast and I'm not. He finally stopped but still wouldn't let me near him. He found a groundhog and had it in his mouth, so I started to scream and my dad finally caught up to my dog. He was chasing him around and finally got a hold of him and got him to drop the groundhog. The groundhog scurried off of a short bridge and into the (not very watery) creek below. By the time I got to the bridge part the groundhog was no where to be seen, so I'm assuming he had run off. There was no blood so I'm really hoping he was okay. I wanted to try to find him so we could take him to the vet but they are biters and that's not a chance I was taking. I'm not even sure what happened to the broken collar, I was upset and crying and not really paying attention at that point. I do have the ID tags and things that were on it though.
1. Do you think the groundhog made it?
2. Should I inform the manufacturer how much this collar sucked?
3. My dog had obedience classes shortly after we adopted him when he was around 7 months old. I'm thinking they didn't work as he still pulls for the whole entire walk, and obviously doesn't listen to me at all when he is in a situation like the groundhog one. Should I sign us up for more? Is it too late for him? I feel like it's never too late but I'm not sure.
4. Do any of you use a dog harness like this, this, or this? What type do you use? If you were using a regular collar originally was your dog okay with the adjustment? Did you find it easier to walk them with the harness?
