My husband and I bought plane tickets to Rome via a sweet ass Turkish Airlines deal - $650 RT per person.  The catch is that we're in Istanbul for 23.5 hour layovers each way, but who cares because we'll get to SEE ISTANBUL.  Or 48 hours worth of it.  Our itinerary is:Collapse )

Question is: Have any of you either flown Turkish Airlines, or been to Istanbul?  I'm pretty stoked about the flights even though I hate flying, cuz they're red eyes so my circadian rhythm will hopefully not get f-ed up, and because the airline was voted Best in Europe 2012.  I'm curious as to how to spend those 48 hours there though.

Also we're going to be staying in exclusively Airbnb places, so if you have any recs for rooms/apts that'd be great.  Also recs for things to do in Paris/Rome/the outskirts (besides the obvious).  I spent about 4 days in Rome back in 2004 and 18 hours in Paris that same trip, so I've seen a little of the former and none of the latter.  Husband's never been to Europe.

The median number of books read per year by Americans aged 16 and above was 6 in 2012.  This includes audio books and e-books.  How many have you read?  How many books would you consider to be "a lot" to read in one year?

I have some friends that are always above 100, which impresses me.  Since having kids, I feel lucky to have read 15-20 in a year, though I do read online and in magazines quite a bit.

Have you planned your own funeral at all? What do you want written on your headstone? Srs and non-srs. Feel free to answer in the hypothetical if you don't plan on being buried.

Shaving cats at home

Dear, pet owners of TQC...
It's been ridiculously hot over here (it's supposed to hit 117F on Wed) and I have three cats and no air conditioner in my house, I've been thinking of trimming their fur to give them some relief from the heat, I have no money to take them to the groomers or I would. (Also most groomers here don't seem to take cats.)

zombie apocalypse would you survive or get killed off?

I'm going to be honest I think I'd be in trouble. I'm terrible in crisis situation. I'm the panic type. I very much see myself as the character who gets slapped is told "HOLD YOUR SELF TOGETHER." I'm also not the violent type.

Though I have played/watch enough zombie videogames/movies to know the do's and don't's.

This question brought to you by...The Last of Us. Which brings up more questions.

Did any of you play Last of Us? I already beat it! I'd LOVE to chat about last of us.

If you haven't played do you plan too?

I also have to say the real reason I bought the Last of Us is I LOVE Uncharted series was willing to follow Naughty Dog where ever they were headed.

Last question with no relation. "If you were a diving board what would you want a person to do on you?" (something like that) brought to you by Malcolm in the Middle. It was a question that was asked on the show. Though why not ask it here. If you need more content. The three brothers found a random diving board they wanted to do some super dangerous stupid stuff. Then they asked that question. The conversation went to taking the diving board ice skating...

man Iran dooset daram

Have you ever developed a really strong interest in a culture/country that isn't yours (and not the culture/country you're living in)?

Over the last year, I've really become obsessed with all things Persian. I read books on Iran, I'm learning Farsi, I cook Persian food, I just went on a trip to Iran, I have heaps of Persian friends, I hang out at Persian cafes, and I'm always up to date with Iranian news. I guess the reason for this is that my non-boyfriend/complicated relationship person is Persian, and I also work (and volunteer) with a lot of people from Iran. But God, sometimes I live and breathe that place/culture and I don't even fully know why... 18 months ago I wouldn't have given the place a second thought.

What other culture are you most interested in? Why? What do you like most/find most fascinating about it?
