Do you know anyone who's all into the "science" of health magnets? Or any other whack health practices?

Because, omg, my bff has become all into them and swears they work. She even gave me pamphlets full of pseudo-scientific explanations for how they work. She's walking around wearing megnetic necklaces, shoe inserts, drinking magnetized water that makes her have to pee every five minutes, and is installing magic magnetic light bulbs in all her lamps. And she refuses to take anything for her headaches because NO THE POWER OF MAGNETS WILL SAVE ME I JUST HAVE TO WAIT LONG ENOUGH. I try not sigh at her, but really.

I have a friend coming to stay with me at my house for a few days. Could any of you suggest some good hostessing tips for me?

So far, the guest bedroom is clean and the bed has fresh sheets. I've provided a set of towels for her. I put a little plant and a chocolate bunny beside the bed for her to enjoy.

Before I move outta here for good, what are some places I should visit before I leave Texas? And I don't mean only places IN Texas, I mean nearby places that are cheaper to fly/drive to.

I was told to go to Mexico and backpack through it, but I have no idea where to go in Mexico. Also, any nearby states worth visiting?? I'm supposed to go to New Orleans I think.

1)If you have a camera that takes pretty good pictures in low light, what is it? When taking pictures on a vacation do you value image quality or battery life more?
2)What's your favorite restaurant to eat at for breakfast? What do you order there?

Home cooking

How often do you do from-scratch cooking at home? Have you ever tried making homemade food products like craft beer or homemade cheeses? For those who bake, ever made a sourdough starter from your wild yeasts? (no inoculating!)

For those of you who like to have background noise while studying - Do you have a particular playlist of movie that you put on while you're studying? Is it always the same or does it vary by subject, or is it always different?

I always put my DVD of Bicentennial Man on when I'm writing essays, largely because I won't sing along to it or get distracted as sometimes happens with music, and I've seen it so many times it's not distracting. Also it's a fairly long movie so I don't need to restart it very often. It occurred to me that yesterday I essentially had it playing on repeat for about 8 hours.

I asked over in law questions..but I'm waiting for the post to go through...

Long story short...ex-husband and I had our home foreclosed on. Anywho...the court date for it is coming up. I've got some meetings at work on that day. I'm trying to rearrange my schedule, but what would happen if the ex went and I didn't? I'm in Illinois, btw. He's the main borrower and I was the co-borrower if that means anything.

DK/DC: What are you having for lunch?

ETA: What was the last disgusting thing you ate? I just tried Caramel Bugels...and they were nasty.

I usually make smoothies with frozen strawberries and skim milk, and they are delicious. Do you think a smoothie consisting of unsweetened iced tea and frozen strawberries would be disgusting? Is there any chance of it being delicious?

Can you be happy for someone if it ultimately results in your own misery?
Depends on the person, if its a friend or family member, probably. But generally not.

Do generally take responsibility for your own happiness or believe its circumstantial on your situation or position in life?
If things are going shitty in my life, I have a really hard time finding happiness.

Are you an optimist or a pessimist?
hmmm...are you surprised to say I'm a pessimist?

sympathy card etiquette

My [married into the family] uncle's mother died a few weeks ago. He lives overseas, so we just got the letter over the weekend. He addressed it to my parents, me, and my husband.

I want to write him a sympathy letter, but should I have my husband sign it? He never met my uncle's mother, while I have, once. I was planning on mentioning how I'll always remember her/her house, etc, but I think it would be weird if my husband randomly signed the card when he never met her.

He has met my uncle, however.

Should I write my cousins a sympathy card, too? She was their grandmother [obviously] or is one to my uncle enough?

yeah, yeah, I fail at sympathy cards. I've written a grand total of 0 in my entire life

I gave my number to the guy from this post and he is indeed interested. We're supposed to have coffee later this week and when I was telling my friends I referred to it as a "coffee date". One of my friends informed me that coffee doesn't count as a real date?
Do you agree? What, in your opinion, is a real date?

What have you found out has a different name than what you're accustomed to?

I recently found out that what I've known all my life as "French toast" is called, in other climes, "eggy bread". Also, I was never able to look at a woman I knew named Fanny without a slight flinch after about 1998, which is when I found out that fanny is a vulgar term in England. Funny though because I had already called her a vicious old twat a couple of times out of her hearing.

If you use sweeteners what is(are) your favorite(s)?

I like cane sugar in demerara (Florida Crystals) and refined forms for tea. I've bought some agave but what I got seems more of a syrup than I expected. Looks like it might be nice to use for pancakes too. In the past I've used Stevia but it is still too pricey for me even though there are a lot more sources for it lately.

If you're in a relationship, what did you do for your last anniversary?
If you're not in one, how would you want to celebrate an anniversary? Or talk about anniversaries with past flames?

My boyfriend and I are approaching 2 years. On our anniversary we're going to the drive-in theater and eat a lot of candy.

I'm applying to two masters programs. One is at the local university (UDC) and the in-state tuition isn't bad. The other program is free, but requires working for free for a year while you get started on it (but also comes with the benefit of experience). Which would you do?

ETA: I'd be working full-time from 9-5 with the latter. The former would allow me to continue working during the day.

I have two large dogs.  I'd like to find them a ball, something around beach ball size.  I've tried both beach and yoga balls, but they don't last an hour.  I've checked pet stores and various websites, but I can't find anything tougher than a yoga ball.   Does anyone know of a dog toy like this or have any other ideas for substitutions?

I've got a place on a gap year placement which is for a month in Berlin, writing a travel review pamphlet thing. (More about it here)
It costs a lot though - £900 for a month. This includes accommodation and langage classes every morning for the month.
I should go for it y/n?
ETA: At the moment I can't really afford it, and would be borrowing off my already tested parental bank account. However, after this I would be working full time, so could pay them back. My other tentative plan is to move to Amsterdam once I have enough cash.

Dk/dc; have you ever done a gap year style working holiday? How did it go? Was it worth it?

stupid bank

Today I looked at my bank account and apparently somehow yesterday when I bought gas with my debit card the gas station credited my account $111 (for no reason), then I was charged with two separate overdraft fees for the gas I bought when I definitely had enough money for the stupid gas in the first place. I'm gonna call the bank tomorrow obviously, but has anything like this dumb shit happened to you before? What does it meeaann?

So, there's this guy in one of my classes. Long story short, it's painfully obvious he's interested, he's had my number, but for some reason I think he's too shy to ask me out or something. Well, last class is Monday. When I go in, how do I persuade him to go out with me and then possibly engage in some sweet, sweet love-making? (obviously asking him out myself would be just too simple.)

Also, I'm getting my nails done on Friday. What color should I get? I want something bold, rich, or vampy. (let's assume they have ALL THE COLORS).
