So I'm just finishing up my 2nd year at UBC in Biology, and I'm ridiculously unhappy with being in school right now. I really want to take a year off to go travel on my own next year, and then come back in fall of 2011 to school, and finish my degree in 2013 or 2014. It's only tentative right now, since I have until early September before my decision has to be finalized. I've already mentioned the idea to a few important people in my life, and so far the response has been pretty negative - "what if you don't finish your degree?" "Why don't you just finish your degree first and then you're free to go do whatever?"
Question: Have any of you ever taken a year off while in university? What did you do? How did you pay for it? Why did you take a year off?
(FYI: I work with Southwestern during the spring and summertime, so it's really only the fall months I'd be traveling or whatever.)
When do you think YouTube's "Meet the Candidates" page will show up?
Also, are there any good blogs where I can get info about developmental disabilities? I've tried Google, but not only are the results I've gotten incredibly boring and difficult to understand, but they lack the personal voice of someone who either has a DD or knows someone who does.
I got into college ED, visited a month ago and bought a sweatshirt. I really want to wear it to school today, because it's really cute sweatshirt. I feel a little uncomfortable wearing it when so many of my friends are stressed out right now about admission results coming out this month and next.
I had a dream last night about my friend that died 3 years ago. I have dreamt of him just a handful of times, it was never out of the ordinary. Last night, however, in the dream I got to hug him but he was crying.
I have looked up as many things as I could and nothing made sense. Does anyone know much about dream interpretation that could give me a clue?
Does anyone have any experience with Compaq Presarios? I need a new computer, and this one looks pretty good. The reviews are great, and it's in our budget, but I've never used a Compaq before. Are they any good?
Does it bother you when someone bothers you to answer a question for them and then wants a different answer?
My roommate just woke me up nearly two hours early to ask me what classroom our class today is in. When I told her she said "are you SURE?" about twenty times and then when I finally told her to listen or GTFO, she sighed like a martyr and went upstairs and then proceeded to loudly phone 7 people in our class, all of whom gave her the same answer I did. Now I can't fall back asleep and kind of want to skin her.
I've completely fallen in love with a lot of early Muse, but at the time they were actually playing that stuff on tours in Europe I was a scrawny little American kid who pretty much only listened to country and 90s pop. :(
Is there anything you regret being "late to the party" for, or otherwise unable to get the full awesome experience with due to chronological, geographic, or other constraints? Share the details.
My boyfriend's birthday is next week, when I asked him what he'd like for his Birthday Dessert, he requested either: Tiramisu, Carrot Cake, or yellow cake with cream cheese frosting. I am a pretty proficient baker, so which one of these should I make for him?
And, obviously, my second question is what is YOUR favorite dessert?
GUISE! I need some help. :( I've exhausted google and I called the Olympic ticket hotline but I still can't find what I need.
I am taking my sister to go see a sledge hockey game at the paralympics in Vancouver next Saterday. However, the only Canadian game that day is sold out. My only option is to buy tickets from a third party seller. I've tried kijiji and craigslist and the local classifieds but the only tickets I can find are for the opening ceremony or for the gold medal game. Does anyone know where else I could try? Any secret ticket selling site? The game, fyi, is Canada vs Italy on March 13.
I've been up all night on energy drinks and now I feel like shit, all nauseous and shaking. But I still have lots and lots of things to do today. How can calm down enough so I don't feel like I want to puke, but not so much that I fall asleep?
How do you go about making hot chocolate with marshmallows? I have never had this, but I want to and I want to do it right. On google I've just found "place marshmellows ontop of chocolate" is that really all? How DO YOU do it? Tips? Tricks?
FOR DAILY CONTACT WEARERS ONLY THE REST OF YOU DRUG ADDICTS DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER.
When you get your contacts out first thing in the morning( or whenever you put them in, I'm not judging yo. SLACKERS)Do you RINSE them again, or just take them right out of the case and pop them in you eye(s)??? AM I WASTING PRECIOUS FLUIDS ON A BASELESS RITUAL OR DO I RE-RINSE THEM AFTER SOAKING IN FLUID ALL NIGHT????????
Do you agree with the statement ignorance is bliss?
Example: Your SO has an affair that you never find out about. At the time of the affair, you were going through relationship issues that you have since worked though and the affair has ended. Your SO deeply regrets the affair and does not want to damage your current relationship by confessing it to you. Are you the type of person that would want to know about it even though it will be hurtful or would you rather not know since it is in the past?
Assume there is no chance that a similar situation will ever occur in the future.
When you watch a TV show/movie where a character with very average grades gets into Stanford/Harvard/Yale, does it make you bat an eye at all? Or do you just shrug it off because it's fiction? Would you have preferred it if the writers made them go to somewhere more realistic?
I'm thinking specifically of A Cinderella Story, where Hilary Duff's character AND her boyfriend get into Harvard in the end. well you get the picture.
If you ask someone in their mid-twenties if they're in school and they say "no" do you automatically assume that means they never went to or dropped out of higher education?
Every time someone asks me if I'm in school and I say "no" their face falls until I say "I graduated college two years ago," then they suddenly light up again. Or if I don't extrapolate on the "no" they tell me something like "Oh, maybe someday" or ask me "Why not?"
-Your boyfriend/girlfriend still lives with his/her parents. -You and his/her parents get along great; they like you, you like them. -Your boyfriend/girlfriend wants to sleep together every night, but since (s)he never suggests sleeping at your apartment (you live with roommates, not your parents), you interpret this as him/her preferring to sleep at his/her place.
What do you think of sleeping (often) at a significant other's place when he/she lives with their parents? Would you think it's rude to stay there all the time, even if they don't seem to mind your presence at all?
Feed the dog before yourself, so long as you can keep him/her. Hopefully you'll start making more money soon.
Sell/give the dog to someone else who can take care of it, that way the both of you can eat.
Feed yourself one day, feed the dog the next, etc.
Feed yourself, of course! The dog doesn't need food.
Yeah, this woman apparently starved her two dogs to death because she couldn't afford money for them. She brought them to the animal hospital, saying she couldn't bare to see them starving anymore. They died soon after. She's an idiot.
I'm making a mix CD for a mate who wants some new songs. He said he just wants new music, doesn't care what it is. Well, except for country. I've got most of the songs from the UK top 40, as well as some from the US top 40. But everything I've put on is pretty much all techno/dance & rap.
What other new songs could I throw on? When he says 'anything', I'm guessing he means only rap, techno, rock, punk, pop, etc. The standard 'popular' genres.
There's this guy I met some years ago. We got along very well and were friends. When we stopped having the same classes our friendship cooled down a bit and we saw each other less. I liked him a lot and there was a time when I would regularly ask him if we could see each other and he would always say he was busy. I stopped asking him and then he started asking me if we could do things but at the last minute he always said he couldnt come. This has been going on for like a year. I never again asked him but he keeps asking me. Last time he asked me out, he simply didnt come. He then apologized and offered to invite me to eat next day but canceled again. This situation has slowly made me so meh towards him and this friendship that I dont even feel like writing him anymore after I told him that this situation got old already.
Any opinions? I dont wanna be rude to anybody or let a friendship die but I really feel like trying and trying is beating a dead horse. Insights? Have you ever experienced something similar? How did it turn out?
So I haven't gotten an email notification in like, forever. I went to "My Account Settings", then "Notifications" and every time I check the box for notifications of comments or whatever to be sent to my inbox, I got to click "save" and the box is unchecked again. What on earth is wrong with lj? Subbing to certain threads and posts can be annoying because they clutter my lj inbox and it all just looks...messy. Meh.
Any solutions? I've done searches and found quite a few people with this problem, only I have yet to find any sort of solution.
do you ever think the given/scientific names of inanimate objects are cute? which ones? (i don't know how better to word this, so if you can think of a way i'm open to suggestions :D) OR what words do you usually say in a different tone than your "normal" talking-voice?
my answer: i think phalanges are THE CUTEST NAMES for fingers and toes. i always have to wiggle my fingers and make my voice higher by a bit (and sometimes use a british accent) when i say it. (yeah i know it's for the finger-bones-ish but whatever, close enough)
Yesterday at the somewhat crowded bus stop, a woman was YELLING at/to someone on her cell phone in a foreign language. She was making a massive spectacle of herself that she seemed oblivious to. It bothered me that I had no idea what she was so mad about.
What would make you SO ANGRY that you would yell into your cellphone in a crowd of people?
So, a few people commented on my post last week saying they sniff their socks and/or underwear when they take them off. How many people do this? Do you, dear reader, sniff your socks and/or underwear after removing them?
So I was just invited to this rec night at my friend's church. I'm not a religious person though I believe in a higher power, and I am definitely not a church person.
He did the whole conning me into it thing by saying hey wanna come hang out we're gonna have food and video games and board games and ping pong and I was like hell yes and he's like it's at my church and I was like ughhhh to myself but I told him that it still sounds fun because hey it does, just not as fun as it originally sounded. </valleygirl>
Considering the fact that most Christians around here are evangelicals, I will probably be preached to and/or having people trying to convince me to come to their services. This in and of itself will not bother me but I know that I will not come. Would it be prudent of me to offer up white lies in telling them I will consider it or would it be best to be up front and say that church isn't my thing?
If you were a con artist, what type of scams would you pull?
ETA: The more I consider this, the more I really don't want to go. Ugh, I hate thinking about backing out of social situations I've already committed to. I'm in a quandary now. Go and potentially have my Friday night ruined by being proselytized at or not go and potentially have no plans at all? ETA again: Told him I'm not going. eff that.
Once I finish library school, I'll have to be willing to go just about anywhere since library gigs are fairly scarce. Will you tell me some redeeming factors about your area? If there are no redeeming factors, why?
Alternately, will you tell TQC about your favourite hangout spot?
Have you noticed that the "location" button also reveals your street address in addition to your city and state?
I'm looking to buy an iPod sync cable. I just went to Target to check them out and they were like, $30! I know I can buy them for way cheaper online but I was hoping to get one this weekend. Is there any store that you know of where I could get one for under $10?
DK/DC: Do you ever get tears in your eyes when you go #2? Why is that?
Have any of you all ever doing genealogical research on your family? How far back in the tree did you go? I'm very interested in tracing my family tree, I just don't know where to start! My dad is 3rd or 4th generation Mexican-American while my mom hails from Barcelona, Spain. Where to start?
So, I was driving up 91 North towards Northampton MA on Tuesday 3/2 a little after 7:00pm. I see a flash of light light up the sky to the north. It wasn't lightning, there was no rain, no thunder and it looked like it originated from the ground. Anyone know what it is or how I could find out? I'm very curious.
I just bought a camera from woot.com (Kodak Easyshare c190) and it came with no memory card; it takes an SD card. My old camera used a CompactFlash card, so I have no familiarity with SD and what the various numbers and specs mean when I'm looking at them online.
When it says speed "X" or "60X" or whatever, what exactly is X, and how much X does a typical user need? I usually take single shots, I don't use it for video very often, I don't shoot "continuous" more than 1-2 pictures etc. When it says "professional high speed," does this have any meaning at all? Because "professional high speed" at my local camera store costs double or more what the Kodak SD card costs at Target.com.
Have you ever completely overhauled your room? I'm talking about going through everything, purging all the junk, putting into boxes, taking everything out, painting and then putting all the stuff back neatly, or some combination of this.
Any advice? I'm going to go through and thrash a bunch of junk and box up stuff but I have no idea where to start, it just all seems so overwhelming.
