My housemates and I bought a couch that was owned by a cat lady. I'm allergic to cats. I'm allergic to my couch. What are some cheap ways to reduce the allergens in my couch? I've read things that say "clean it" but what's the best way?
Today is the last day of college before half term. I've been unwell (I has a cold). College is pissing me off with a combination of not teaching me the things I need to know, expecting me to do those things 30 seconds after being told how to do said things, being rushed to do said thing, work not being check after being rushed, people passing after not being checked properly, a couple of asswipes in my class. I don't have an exam. I'm probably not going to pass any practical assessments today. I already feel so stressed I want to pull my hair out.
So, I'm thinking about renting an apartment next year on my college campus. I... have no idea how to do this. I've never had to make monthly payments for anything and at the moment I don't even have a job. That can (hopefully) be fixed, but I'm still a little terrified at the idea. Seasoned apartment renters, how do I go about finding a good apartment without getting gypped? What should I look for and what should I avoid?

I had to talk/sneak my way into work today. The base is shut down for "winter storm warnings" (it's 40 and raining...big deal), and the base is closed to all but "essential personnel". My company is considered essential; I personally am not. But, I managed to get here simply because I didn't want to waste 8 vacation hours sitting at home with nothing to do on a rainy day.
So...now that I'm here...and pretty much the only one in the office (and there's not really anything to do all day)...how should I entertain myself?
I should make myself some buttermilk pancakes for breakfast, y/n? I have real maple syrup, none of that fake "pancake syrup" bullshit.
With or without butterscotch chips?
What are your plans for the day? I'm going to a job fair this afternoon, maybe, if people aren't big huge idiots about driving in the "snow" (we MIGHT get an inch. lolol), but other than that I got nothin.
My school is ridiculous. IT blocks sites for no reason and I can't find decent photo hosting. Photobucket, imgur.com, and tinypic.com are all blocked. Twitpic works but it's slow and I can't do much with it. Facebook takes foreverrr on this connection. What photo hosting sites do you know of besides these?
my kid is fiiiiiiiiinnnnnaaaaallllllyyyyy getting her braces off monday after next. i'm going to make her a gift basket full of non-braces-friendly foods and plan on including a bag of those kraft caramel squares, a couple sugar daddies, skittles, and a bunch of different kinds of gum. do you have any suggestions for what else might go in there?
how do you react when someone is tailgating you when you're driving?
what if you're going the speed limit and the person behind you is flashing their brights and honking at you? (this happened to me on my way home from work last night and i didn't do anything because that particular road is a speed trap.)
I have limited experience cooking in general and what cooking I have done has been for a max of two people. My mom wants me to start making dinner but it's for six of us and I don't want to make the same things she does. I'm also po', so I can't do delicately braised saffron infused lobster tails with bird spit soup sauce and a caviar garnish.
Question: Do you have any recipes or know any sites with recipes that I should try out?
I'm going to be doing an internship out of state within the year. They provide apartments for interns which have basic furniture and cooking utensils. Aside from towels, bedding, storage bins, etc. what are some house things i'll need to bring? I've started a list but surely I am not thinking of everything.
In Australia, our universal health care system is called Medicare (website: http://www.medicareaustralia.gov.au/about/whatwedo/medicare.jsp). Independent midwives who attend home births are not currently covered under Medicare. This means that if you want a trained midwife to assist you during your pregnancy and birth, it can cost around $5000.
Do you think midwives who attend home births should be covered under Medicare (making the service either free or much cheaper)? Why/why not? If you have a similar system where you live, do you know if midwives are covered? Should they be covered?
Hello. I'm looking for books to read or research that involve a tumultuous friendship/any type of relationship that leads to self discovery. The two I have in mind (don't laugh, they're obviously completely different styles of books) are A Separate Peace by John Knowles and Looking for Alaska by John Greene. The idea of one quieter character who is befriended by an enigmatic type, their friendship is complicated, maybe someone dies, etc. What other books that follow this theme can you suggest?
So, I'm thinking about selling a ton of clothing online. If I sell them on ebay, should I a. sell them all together (I have all kinds of different things) or b. Sell them by type of shirt (they're all shirts but like polos, sleeveless, button up, blouses, etc.)?
OR Is there any other way I could sell them online?
My co-worker sent me an electronic cookie-gram for valentine's day, except I have to take my code into the bakery to get my cookie. How lame is that? Also, what kind of cookie should I get?
Do you have school/work on Monday?
I don't! It seems like a lot of people do, which is odd since my company doesn't exactly have a lot of holiday days
What's the last thing to disappoint you?
My husband has been out of town for two weeks and was supposed to return today, which is awesome, except he was supposed to fly out of Atlanta. Two canceled flights later, I'm thinking he won't make it today. We were supposed to be having a fun v-day weekend out of town this weekend, complete with a couples' 10k :(
Do you know what Victoria's Secret is? What kind of sauce should I make with my pasta today? Have you ever been someone's one phone call? Who was it for? Is the one phne call really the king of all phone calls?
So I skimmed back through today's posts and didn't see it - apologies if I missed it.
Did you know that the new season of "Survivor" is its 20TH here in the US?? There was a moment in last night's premiere that just cracked me up (and don't let the title fool you - it's a little misleading):
The friends I usually hang out with on weekends ALL went home for the weekend. It's freaking me out. Three of them were going home for Valentine's Day and then they ALL followed. The only ones left are going to a frat and I haaaaaaaaate frats.
So I am extremely bored and snowed in my dorm for the next two days. What can I do to entertain myself? I have very limited TV channels and almost no books. Any fun websites other than Sporcle and Facebook? ENTERTAIN MEEEEEEEEEEEE
This morning I transfered $20-something from my savings account to my checking account, online. IT automatically took the money out of my savings but didn't put it in my checking. How long should I wait before calling the bank and having them figure out where my money is?
Every other time I've made a transfer online it goes into the other account right away.
Edit: Thanks, I tried called and "due to inclement weather [they] are experiencing extremely long hold times" so I'm just going to go to the bank tomorrow morning and see what's up, if it's still not in my account tomorrow.
I'm writing a fictional story for fun, and there's a particular character I need a name for. He's the 'bad guy' in the story and I'd like to find a name that fits. So, TQC, what names sound like sinister/bad guy names to you? Be as creative as you want to!
I'm trying to remember two computer games I played as a kid. One was in the early to mid 90s, the other was around 2000.
First game: You could choose from a variety of scenes, like the wild west, put things into the scene, like trains and horses, and then it would animate the scene. I don't think it was KidPix, because I played it on my home computer and my parents wouldn't have sprung for that. I think the version I had was a demo.
Second game: You played a British explorer with a moustache whose job it was to fly around the world and take pictures.
I've had the most stressful few weeks TQC, and now I want some awesome girly pampering time. Except I want it cheap, because I'm a poor poor student. I know that some training places do treatments cheaply because they need people to practise on, but my Google-Fu is failing because I don't know how to word it best.
TL;DR: What's the best thing to search for when I want an inexpensive beauty treatment?
I still have not received a W-2 from one of my employers. The FAFSA deadline for the most aid money is on Sunday, and so I NEED to file my taxes as soon as possible. I've stalked called my employer like crazy, but they refuse to fax it or do it online. What do I do? I tried to use my pay stubs as information but they're missing a whole bunch of info that I need (EIN, taxes withheld) and the office for questions like this is closed for the weekend (not that they ever answer, anyway).
I work in a clothing store and we're doing a wee fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Care. A customer has made a cake & for £1 you get to 3 tries at guessing the weight of the cake. Since it's Valentines Day on Sunday, the cake has hearts on it & we have a tiny amount of love themed decorations.
It's running today & tomorrow but so far it hasn't been very popular.
I'm going in tomorrow on my day off to try and get as much raised as possible. Any suggestions as to how I can acheive this?
Annoying piercing question, sorry... but I promise its not a "how much did it hurt":
Anyway, I want to get my nose pierced. Anyone out there who has/had theirs pierced... how much did it swell (if it did swell) and for how long did it swell? -I know I could ask a piercing or body mod community, but you guys are faster to responses.
Unrelated, do you have any family members that just seem to have something against you for no good reason? Tell me stories? -My aunt does, I think its because she has a kid my age and she always compares us to make my cousin seem better. Whenever I do anything new, she's always demeaning. I got my first job at a grocery store when I was 16 and at my birthday party when my dad told her I just got the job she loudly exclaimed that I'd never talk to anyone and I'd be awful at the job.
My mum has some strange phrases/sayings that she uses often. These are some I can remember, there's probably quite a few more. (Some of them I've heard other people use on occasion) ( Collapse )
What are some weird phrases/words that you or someone you know uses?
Does your SO snore? How do you cope with it? My bf's snoring has got really really loud lately. I often wake up through the night & cannot get back to sleep because of it. So I go to sleep on the sofa & he'll get offended that I'm not sleeping with him. He doesn't realise just how loud it can be.
What are some fucking hilarious April Fool's jokes? My boyfriend and I have a few friends that have gotten engaged since Thanksgiving (a total of 8 couples!), so we're going to change our Facebook relationship statuses to "engaged" and I am going to take a picture with a ring on and freak everyone out for a day. We've been dating a little less than a year, and I'm in the process of a divorce, so it'd be funny to see my family flip out. Failing that, I need something more awesome.
I'm trying to remember the name of a country. I'm pretty sure it's tropical. The only definitive thing I remember is that they have a huge multi-day festival that occurs every 400ish days. Does this ring a bell for anyone?
Okay, scenario: Say for the past three nights, you have not been able to sleep because it is so hot in your room. Your room mate has a bedroom with a door leading to the back yard. Your room mate is also your landlady, so it's REALLY her house. Anyway, your bedroom is very small and windowless. WITHOUT the heat, you have to blow a box fan at full blast to feel comfortable. You find the thermostat set to 83 degrees. Your bedroom feels more like 90. There is no circulating air whatsoever in your room because, again, no window. Your room mate has mentioned several times that she should insulate her windows and put film over the door in her room, but hasn't. She also has a space heater. To top it off, the $40 box of chocolate you bought your SO for Valentine's Day melted because you hid it under your bed. You wake up drenched in sweat because it is so fucking hot.
Would it be rational for you to turn off the thermostat and leave a passive aggressive note on it? If not, what would you do? I WANT TO MOVE BUT CAN'T UGH WHAT THE FUCKING HELL?
I think I might move my bed out to the living room and crack a window tomorrow while she's gone so she gets the hint.
ETA: OKAY SO I JUST OPENED MY DOOR AND PUT THE FAN IN IT SO THE AIR COULD CIRCULATE AND THIS HO COMES OUT AND TELLS ME TO TURN THE FAN DOWN BECAUSE IT'S LOUD "I KNOW YOU'RE HOT BUT I GOTTA SLEEP" OH FUCK NO BITCH. I'm not paying rent for a few months, saving money, and moving out of here. Then telling the fire dept. that she's renting the room because it IS apparently illegal to rent a room without windows.
Do you only seem to attract crazies? Details? The last one was messed up from past relationship troubles and could never look me in the eyes, the one I am (was?) planning to ask out is on meds for being crazy which make her hallucinate and have blank spots in her memory during which time she does odd/out of character things.
Seriously, what's with all the crazy people?
Are you self-conscious about your music? What do you most want for people to not know you listen to? Someone grabbed my ipod today and I was D: until I got it back.
