Okay, question club. I'm not sure you'll be able to help me out this time, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

There was a scene in a book, I think it was a russian novel, where a man was describing an encounter he had. Well, it wasn't really an encounter. Go with me here.

A man, not the main character, is recounting a memory he had of seeing a woman standing on a boat. I think she was wearing a white dress. The woman never even saw the man, nothing important happened, but the man said it changed his life and he never went for a month without thinking about the girl on the boat.

Was it Resurrection by Leo Tolstoy? This isn't really something I can Google. The scene itself was very short and not all that instrumental to the plot, so Sparknotes, etc, probably won't help me, either.

Remember Austin Powers in Goldmember?

Remember at the beginning when Austin's about to have a threesome with those japanese twins?

And he takes out that list?

The last one is something about making his father proud of him. Any Austin Powers fans remember the exact wording?

Is it just -Make Daddy Proud? I thought it was longer than that, though. -Make Dad Proud of Me?

I don't know and I want to use it as a spoof in a thing I'm writing. But obviously I can't mock it incorrectly. That would just be lame.

Edit: Earn Daddy's Respect, thank you to all those who actually went and found YouTube videos for me.

Okay.
There was a scene in either a book or a movie where there are these two boys, and when they were younger, one of them was being beat up by bullies. The other one saw his friend being beat up, and hid instead of helping. The one being beat up saw his friend run away and never trusted his friend the same afterwards. The story is taking place a while later, and the plot of whatever book or movie it was, it is relevant that this one boy doesn't trust the other. Does anybody know where this is from? I don't think it's from a very obscure story, for some reason I have the feeling it's pretty popular. It's been bothering me forever.

My friend is starting his first year as associate band director at the HS I just graduated from. He just called my friend and I to come help with band camp. Honestly, I couldn't be more pleased.

1. Have you ever been in Marching Band?
Just my senior year, but I was co-section leader of front ensemble/pit
2. What did you play?
Mainly top marimba, some xylophone and vibraphone
3. If you haven't been in Marching Band, did you think those kids were all losers?
The first 3 years of high school, I was severely jealous. My junior year, my orchestra director told me I couldn't be in it because we were going to Chicago, and it would be too time consuming. So senior year, I was all over that junk.
4. If you could march any other instrument besides one you play (or any at all), then what would it be?
I am auditioning for drumline on bass drum at Florida State next year.

7:11 PM 8/3/07 · Going to BaGG for years did hit an interesting point with the current job. Particularly where Jason WarlockWarlock's concerned, as he's got this whole thing with no one at our plaace of employ knowing about the place. Even to the extent of the one time I saw someone in the building that I saw at the club and told him he informed me that not only had I not seen this person there, this person has never been there.

Just as a general rule. He never actually saw who I saw.

Still, occasionally we do discuss the place at work but he's very hush hush about it anytime anyone's in our workspace. Truthfully, I've had no problem with anyone at my previous jobs knowing I go...so this is amusing to me how he gets about it.

On the offchance someone did hear us going on about it, I had decided to handle it creatively.

We both refer to the place as "BaGG". Anyone hears it I figured we could come up with alternatives as to what it stood for instead of Bondage A Go Go. What I initially came up with (which stunned Jason WarlockWarlock into silence and then made him explode with laughter) was the Bay Area Green Grocery.

I've been trying to think up some more:
  • Byron's Amazing Green Gerbils

  • Bob's After Gorgeous Girls

  • Botulism and Great Germs

Obviously these aren't practical. You got anything?

[mood |curiouscurious]

1) Do you have Night Terrors? Did you have them as a kid too?

2) Do you sleep walk? Did you as a kid?

3)When someone wakes you up when you are dreaming,no matter who it is (significant other, mother, father, siblings, friends) do you wake up panicked and have no idea what is going on?

1) I have them now and I'm 20. I didn't have them as a kid. About once a month I sit up and scream, sometimes I scream 'help me' until someone 'wakes' me up and I immediately fall back asleep. Then when I wake up, I only have a vague memory of the events and have no idea why I was so afraid.

2) I used to sleep walk as a kid, my parents would have to put me back to bed when I was walking around.

3)Anytime someone wakes me up when I'm in a deep sleep I panic. :(

2) Tell me, oh wise ones!

4) I have, and I think it's kinda bland.

5) Very good gel pens (don't stick), otherwise regular old ballpoints.

So my family and I were going to NYC and we wanted to go to one of the Midsummer Night's Dream "Shakespeare in the Park" performances.

1. Have any of you been to Shakespeare in the Park? What was it like? Would you recommend it?

Tickets are free but we can't stand in line for them and we're willing to pay someone for their tickets, I've found some people on craigslist who do this.

2. I've never used craigslist for something like this before; any tips to make the transaction non-sketchy? E.g. what sort of questions I should ask the seller, how I can ensure I won't get ripped off, when/how I should pay him/her, etc?

3. Given the fact that tickets are normally free, but the productions are supposed to be great, and if we don't do this my family and I will probably be paying $110/person to see a Broadway show, how much would you think is a good price for the tickets? I know a lot of you are cheap so don't say what *you* would be willing to pay, but how much you think is the max *my* family should consider paying. ;)

He said he'd like to give me some price quotes on toner and went into our copy room. He's been in there for a good 10 minutes.

He's in there now...how do I get him to leave??

What is your opinion on the fact that people who are good looking have less problems that people that aren't? When I was younger, I thought that pretty girls just couldn't have the same problems as other people, because the fact that they were pretty made life a lot easier for them. That isn't really what I think now, but what is your opinion on that?

edit: Also, what do you think when attractive people talk about the hardships their looks have brought them, you know, "It IS hard being pretty because I feel like nobody really cares about my personality", etc?

I have been overtly lethargic since I started lexapro about 10 days ago.
Within hours of waking up I'm yawning and tired, generally not wanting to do anything yet unable to sleep.

I'm taking it for anxiety, which it has gotten rid of but at the same time it has eliminated my emotions altogether. I got a new car and didn't "whoo-hoo" or anything.

To start with I'm not much for showing emotions (everyone close to me describes me as "stoic") and now I just stare off into space and have a neutral "._." look on my face all the time.

Should I stay on the lexapro and live with being a lethargic blob?

Or should I quit the lexapro and go back to being a nervous wreck?

Internet without Cable or Phone? [Aug. 6th, 2007|06:27 pm]
The Question Club

thequestionclub

[courtneydisney]
I've just moved into a small in-law apartment that's attached to a house. The homeowners are paying the utilities (included in my rent), and have satellite cable, which they've been kind enough to offer a box for my use in the apt. Free cable - great, since I don't watch enough regular TV to warrant paying for it myself.

Internet, though - that's another story. I'm a confirmed junkie, and if I'm not watching movies on my laptop, I'm watching whatever online for entertainment. I'm going to be setting up my desktop and a big monitor to act as my TV, so though I have a TV, I'll probably be freecycling it to save space. There's no internet access in the apartment at the moment - the previous tenant had Comcast cable and internet through the phone company, so everything is accessible and ready to go.

Since I've got a cell phone (this question was prompted by a recent cell vs. landline question), I don't need a land line either, but I don't really see many options to get a decent speed without paying for either useless cable or a useless phone line to run it through.

Any ideas? If I can avoid it, I'd rather pay for just what I'll use - the internet access, and not additional cable/phone bills.

Thanks for the help!

EDIT: I'm in San Mateo, CA - sorry about that!

Dog Poo [Aug. 6th, 2007|08:20 pm]
The Question Club

thequestionclub

[sittolytic]

I live in an apartment building which used to be a gigantic house, but is now divided into four units (of varying sizes).  I walk my dog at least twice a day and at least one of those times he will poo.  I have one of those nifty poo bag dispensers attached to his leash handle, so I always pick up after him.

The communal trash cans and recycling bins are located beside the entrance to the garage, but also next to the steps leading to the front door to the girls' apartment upstairs.  My dog's poo usually goes into the trash cans, but that has become really nasty.

The bags have started becoming stuck to the bottom and when a little rainwater comes in it just gets horribly nasty.  My landlord just took the cans back from the curb (today was trash day) and tossed out a poo bag that was stuck to the bottom of one and didn't get thrown into the dump trucks with the rest of the trash.  It was oozing and moist and COVERED IN MAGGOTS.  :x

The stink and the flies are overwhelming the cans and it's pretty much driving the girls crazy (I shouldn't lol, but I do).  So I want to figure out how to deal with this problem....  Out of courtesy to my neighbors, I want to stop using our communical trash bins for poo bags.  But now I have no idea what to do with them!  Throwing them into our kitchen trash can will make the kitchen reek.

Any ideas?

I broke up with my boyfriend recently, for a lot of reasons, but partly because I felt he just didn't care whether we were together or not, or that he was pretending he didn't care. I was just over it, but I had been in a bad mood all week and so I wasn't torn up about it or anything. The thing is now that I'm feeling better, I really regret doing it. He looked really sad when I told him, like he was about to cry. I know this sounds weird, but I don't really know what to do because I've never broken up with somebody before. Is it natural to feel guilty, or should I actually be feeling guilty because I was in a horrible mood when I did it and therefore not thinking straightly, and it was actually a mistake?

Southwest managed to lose my bag on my return flight today. I've been home for maybe 6 hours, so no big deal at all, and they've been nothing but helpful, responsive, etc. Luggage just sometimes goes on a vacation of its own.

They just called and have sent a guy out to bring it out to me. He left the airport just before 9 at night, and I live a good 3 hour round trip from it. I'm embarassed to admit that I have no idea if I should tip this guy, since I'm generally pretty good with tipping etiquette.

So, should I tip the guy? Granted, it's his job, but it's the skycap's job to take my bags from the curb and I tip him, it's the casino cocktail waitress's job to bring me a drink and I tip her, and just generally am inclined to tip left and right -- $5 or $10 isn't an issue money-wise, certainly, it's just the etiquette that has me confused. Help me, TQC! You're my only hope! (Of not inadvertently being rude, anyway.)

I am going to make stir-fry and want to try something new. I have a can of minced clams to add but have never cooked with them before. Should I add them in during the cooking, or only at the very end, just to warm them up?

Er, I might add that I have never eaten clams before, so what should I expect them to taste like?

I'm trying to remember the name of a book I read a while back; it was a futuristic deal, with a robot who wanted to die but couldn't. Then a human guy found a girl who was living at a zoo but she told him all the animals were robots and the two realized that everyone was stupid because of the drugs they were given and that robots ran everything so they quit the drugs.... or something. And then the guy escaped somehow and ended up in a mall which was inhabited by a bunch of religious wierdos. What is this book?

Have you ever been squaredancing? If yes, did you lovelovelove it?

1. My friend is pre-med and her birthday is coming up. I'm going to PA school, so one of the books I got and loved for my birthday was "Getting in the PA School of Your Choice." I want to get the same kind of book for my friend, only one that helps with advice on applying to medical school, or about med schools. Do you have any recommendations or friends that can attest to a book's value like this?

2. Isn't eating with chopsticks amusing?

Is being childfree just something you're born with, or is it a choice?

Say you are planning to do something big for your SO. Not for any reason/holiday, but because he's went above and beyond lately and you want to show your appreciation for being the greatest person alive.
During a random conversation, you thank him for all that he's been doing and you say you "really should do something special" for him. Out of nowhere, he tells you "not to (thing you were planning)" because it's a waste of money. (FTR, we are financially comfortable and can afford this)

Do you:

a) go ahead with it knowing that he'd want it, love it, and appreciate it anyway

b) think of something else

c) kill him in his sleep for ruining a very good surprise and because he is a freak and can read minds

1. What is your favorite fruit?
Probably Macoun apples. I could eat two every day.
ETA: EEk! I forgot pomegranates! Oh, I love winter only for them.

2. What is your least favorite fruit?
Passionfruit

3. What does passionfruit taste like to you? Is it a subtle flavor for you or an acrid, strong flavor?
It tastes VERY strong to me and acrid like bleached dirt, but my husband says it's a very subtle flavor to him and smooth. I hate it and if I accidentally taste it or kiss him after he has had something with passionfruit, I can't get the taste out of my mouth. Ugh.

4. What is your favorite fake fruit flavor?
Cherry!

5. Least favorite?
Peach. I remember there was this Wacky Fruit gum when I was a child. I wanted to try to soooo bad and begged for it all the time. I think I chomped down two times before spitting it across the room. I also do not like peach schnapps unless mixed with lemonade in a frozen drink. For some reason the lemonade makes it takes like a real peach, which I love.

What do you think of ordering important things online? Like, I'm kind of in love with this dress, and it does have a huge amount of measurements to be filled in, but it is still all submitted online. And the price is so amazing that it almost seems a little shady. This is the hypothetical wedding dress for my hypothetical wedding, do you folks think it's wedding material? I know it's not all white but it's so dang pretty!

To continue on the topic of dresses, what's your thoughts on the obsession with strapless gowns? Personally I'm annoyed that so many dresses are strapless, because only certain specific types of figures can pull it off, imo. Feel free to post pictures either demonstrating how various figures can or cannot pull off that style of dress! (I'd love to see some cannots, really, I'm a meanie like that)

Have any posts on here inspired you in any way? Earlier today I saw a post about exercise and a comment mentioned Yoga Booty Ballet, which I bought ages ago but was too lazy to actually bother with, and seeing someone else say they liked it was enough to motivate me to give it a try! It was fun, and it kicked my ass, so I'm looking forward to a little bit of fitness in my life :)
