balloons up

if you could get money to go somewhere and do something- what would you do?

My school does a thing called venture grants where they will give you up to $1,500 to go do something you want to do over the summer. You can do anything you want- travel abroad and take cooking classes, study music or dance, anything, but you have to be able to bring it back to campus somehow. I didn't think I'd have time this summer to do anything but plans have changed and now I really want to apply... but I don't know what to do! And applications are due in three days. I've never been out of the country (you don't have to go out of the country, but I'd love to.) I know a little Spanish, so a Spanish speaking country would be cool. What should I do/where should I go/ideas, anyone? If anyone is aware of specfic programs or interesting things to check out, please share!

Here is the link to it: http://www.beloit.edu/~syi/venture_grants/

Does anyone know a website (or can explain themself) that explains the correlation between your contact lense strength (my left eye being -4.75 and my right eye being -4.25 for example) and the whole 20/20 vision thing? How do you "translate", so to speak, from one to the other and/or back?

And what about explainations for eyesight getting better (in my contact strength it got better by .25 in both eyes)? I thought it either stayed the same or got worse as people got older. . . (not complaining! lol just curious)

lame spring break question

Probably already asked.. I haven't been around for a few days, but I want to do something fun with a friend for spring break, but we don't have much to spend, like around $600-700 each. We live in Jersey. Can we go anywhere that isn't, like, two states over? Where?

Roommates anyone?

Does anyone here live with roommates?

If so do they follow basic courtesy's with you? Examples would be keeping their personal items [books/cd's/bags/purses/etc] from taking over the common areas, cleaning up after themselves in the kitchen/bathroom, asking before going in the bathroom to take a shower during the evening when everyone is usually up and doing stuff and just may need to go in there?

Again if you have roommates do you try to follow basic courtesy's with them?

Even if you don't have roommates feel free to answer this question, what are some other common courtesy's or rules you think would be important to have with roommates?

I think it's so amusing the things people tend to favor and enjoy when they are high that they don't usually. So I must ask, what is your favorite and least favorite anything/everything about being high?

fave: arizona green tea, showering, and the fact that my mind thinks in ways I never knew possible

least fave: forgetting what im saying as im saying it (sometimes) haha

Have you ever gotten unwanted advances from someone that involved something more than some creep yelling "Hey, baby. How YOU doin?" out their car window? How did you handle it? What are you supposed to do in a situation like that, when the guy is way stronger than you and they won't take no for answer?

When did "no" stop meaning "no"??

I'm at a loss for answers to these questions.

(no subject)

1. Say "spot" out loud, then say "pot" out loud. Does the P sound different to you in the two words?
According to my psychology prof, some people who learned to speak English after childhood hear two distinct P sounds. He mentioned that it happens mostly with people who speak a certain mother tongue, but he couldn't remember which language it was.

2. What is something you do almost every day?
Not things like go pee, but maybe something like have a one hour workout.

The big 2-1

My 21st birthday is coming up.

What are some drinks I should try on my first visit to the bars?  I want to try lots of new and interesting things, since I usually just stick to shots of rum and 151 right now haha.

Don't let me down, TQC...

1. I was recently talking to a friend and the subject of science experiments and crafts we did in elementary school came up.  We both remembered being given this really cool clay-like substance that was white and not super firm or anything like that.  When we touched it with our hands, it would grow really soft and sort of begin to melt  When we left it alone on our desks, it was firmer and more chalk-like.

Does anyone know what the name of this was?  Or, better yet, have a recipe for it?  I've googled in vain.  I have no idea what it was made out of so I'm probably not searching with the best key words beyond 'clay-like, softens when touched', etc.

Edit: Cornstarch + water!  Thank you, you guys!  I really appreciate it!  There's a nifty video of it on YouTube.

2. I'm hosting a Stitch 'n Bitch + Craft party on Friday.  I know that there will be people who won't be interested in knitting and crocheting.  In the past we've worked with Sculpey and made flower-pens.  Anyone have any ideas on what we could do this time?  I was thinking about something with papier mache, but I'm afraid it won't dry fast enough for us to do much more than the sculpting/forming part.

Thanks in advance!

Skin issues...

So I have really really bad skin. Gross even. My skin [more specifically: nose and forehead] is really really oily. Like, really really oily. I know that's commonly known as one's t-zone/spot or something. Well my question is:

Will my skin always be this way? Is there anything I can do to dry it up, or not make it as greasy? Any of you have the same problem?

My boss and I had one of those "remember when we were kids" conversations yesterday. Thankfully we also didn't have to walk up hill all the way in three feet of snow to get to school....

Anyway, my question is what did you do for fun when you were a kid? What did you play with? Do you recall the any of the names of your childhood playmates?

We rode bikes, played in the woods, played with Barbies, etc. Typical 60's stuff. We had Barbies, bikes, a swimming pool (above ground), board games. The girls across the street were Colleen and Terri, a little further away were Judy and "Chickie".

airline seating

I will be taking a flight from ca to ct in the summer (as I had done the previous year) with Delta. With the help of thequestionclub, I was able to ask for a seatbelt extender without a hitch and without feeling embarrassed to ask for it. This year I will be asking for it again unfortunately, but my question this time is...should I pay for an extra seat when I may or may not be able to fit into one?

I get very embarrassed about my hip size (it widened after having children). I have been large for a number of years and even with going to the gym and working out trying to get rid of this unwanted fat my hips/waist size, didnt go down much. I just don't want to inconvenience the person sitting next to me.

Thanx guys, be gentle.

Song recommendations

I'm looking for song recommendations. (I'm not looking for song uploads.) I need songs that will in any way shape or form fit a certain character:

* He was a prostitute, but it was because he wanted to, there was no angsty reason behind it.
* His "act" was that he was the perfect pet, silent and obediant.
* He was raised in an atmosphere where sex was viewed as just another act of entertainment so in a way he's still fairly innocent and naive. (He doesn't get why it's such a big deal to some people.)
* In general he's quiet, smart and very devoted to the people he cares about.
* He's bisexual but prefers girls.

Anything? Anything at all? (Okay, anything besides "Nancy Boy", I've already got that one.)

Do you think that people should be euthanized, much in the same fashion as animals? For example, a man has cancer and is in a lot of pain. His quality of life is awful, he is miserable. Should he be euthanized, much like a family would euthanize the family dog?

What about euthanization of younger people, including children?

Why or why not?

I'm in a lottery that will be happening tonight (YAY!) and they claim that NO TWO PEOPLE will get the same set of numbers. However, the numbers are set up as... 8 ONE digit numbers, ranging from 0-9. From my really bad math skills, I don't think that would be enough to cover as many tickets are likely to be sold for this thing. Am I way wrong, and there's hundreds of millions of combinations? I feel so dumb. :(

I totaled my car last week and have absolutely no clue on a replacement vehicle.

I drove for 8 years a 1999 Honda Civic EX. Bought it brand new, but would rather stick to a used car 2004 or older.  My price range is flexible but definitely nothing over 10,000.

2. Any suggestions on a vehicle for me?

3. And horror stories of past vehicles or anything you would stay away from?

If you suddenly hit the jackpot on fame and fortune, and your opinion could influence people's purchasing decisions, what would be the top 3 goods/services that you would endorse?

Assume that anything you wanted to endorse would be more thrilled to have you do so.

I would endorse:
-Kia (because no matter what nicer cars are out there, my Kia was good to me long before I got rich and famous, and because I think their cars are underated and if I could get more people to buy them I would)
-Taco Bell (because their nasty food is my guilty pleasure and if it's good enough for Carmen Electra to endorse, it's good enough for me)
-Some sportswear or sporting goods store, like REI or EMS (because it's an endorsement true to my real nature and interests, and the commercials would be fun to shoot!)

Another Inconvenient Truth

According to The New York Times, a conservative group has tracked down Al Gore's electric usage for last year from his massive Nashville home. According to the Associated Press, he used 191,000 KWH in his home last year. The national average for the area is about 15,500. His spokeswoman says he gets all that energy via renwable sources (wind power, solar, and so forth) That statement alone reeks of bullshit to me.

Poll #937157 Inconvenient

In light of this information, should he:

Be forced to run in a human sized hamster wheel until he works off the difference from his energy usage to the average.
Have his Oscar taken away from him.
Be flogged by an angry electric company.
Be forced to speak with inflection.
Nothing, I have faith in Gore.

What do all the women here at TQC think about all the HPV/cervical cancer hype going on recently (the past few months, at least in the US)?

Study regarding its prevalence and the vaccine

Have you/will you get the vaccine for those 2 strains HPV?
Do you feel like in 10 years they'll be like, oops sorry it actually gives you heart disease/uterine cancer/some other serious medical side effect? (can vaccines even do this? I'm no doctor).
Does this make you worried?

My roommate is in the process of getting the vaccine for HPV (Gardasil)--it's a 3 step process I believe.  Things like this make me wary when the first come out because they aren't around long enough for side effects to pop up, but like I said before I don't even know if this is relevant when dealing with vaccines.

How well would you say you support yourself relative to others? Are you happy? What did you do to get to where you are? Is there anything else you'd rather be doing?

b) If you do work the regular "normal" type job, is there something you'd rather be doing, or are you fine just the way things are? If you'd rather be doing something else, are you on a path to get there? If not, what would you say has gotten in the way of doing the things you want to do?

Anyways, I've made friends with Google over the past half hour but he hath scorned me because I cannot find the damn thing.

I'm finding billions of My Heart Will Go On midis but they all have weird synthesized instruments in them. I had the midi before I upgraded my computer, and know it is piano only.

Can you please help me find it? It's an absolutely beautiful piano version and I want to use NoteworthyComposer to help me learn to play it.

I've uploaded it in case you want to hear it -- nothing but piano -- click here.

I'm a huge film buff/geek, and I want to keep track of the movies I see, and write little reviews of them. I like to keep track of how many movies from the AFI's Top 100 and IMDB's Top 250 and things like that I've seen. I was wondering if there was a website that will kind of help me keep track of that. . .I belong to a book site and it has a little form where you can rate the book, write down its tags, and add a little blurb, and also look at books others have read. You even have to have a username and you have a little "bookshelf." I guess what I want would be described as a movie journal? I'm not exactly sure how to describe it further. I guess I could use LJ or even a microsoft word document if all else fails, right? Thanks a lot!

So I guess my question to you is have you heard of this?  Yes?  Can you explain it to me some more?  How do you feel?

The first time I did something for a friends birthday, we had a surprise birthday and went to Williamstown, a nearby place about 45 minutes away on a ferry. So now, it's my friend's birthday tomorrow. My present to her was that we made an I LOVE CECILY sign, gave it to people, and took a photo of the person with the sign, then I chucked it all together in a slideshow.

And I will feel majorly bad if I don't do stuff for everyone else... because I always go all out.

But I need ideas for birthday things! What is big and fun and exciting that people enjoy? Except.. it has to be pretty cheap though, because I'm a pretty cheap person. It's just things that seem loving and stuff.

OK everybody, my life has been one giant stress ball lately because I decided to push myself out of my comfort zone by signing up for a screenwriting class. I have no ideas, no passion, there's nothing I want to write about! I managed to scrape together some ideas to turn in last week but I'm not nuts about any of them, and also, most of them are too long, because we're supposed to aim for about a 30 page/30 minute movie. I'm tempted to just throw out all my ideas and adapt something, but I don't really have anything in mind and I don't have much time to hunt for one. OK sorry, TL;DR I know.

So my question to you is-- if you've ever read a short story and thought, wow this would make a great movie, what is it? Extra credit if you can link to it. Contemporary is better than, you know, Poe and stuff, but I'll take whatever you've got.

1. Boys: If your school/place of work held a "spirit month" in which males were not supposed to shave their facial hair for the entire month, would you participate?
Girls: If this meant not shaving your legs/pits, would you participate?

I think our ASB is on crack, nobody is going to do this. Half the guys in school can't even grow facial hair if they wanted to.

2. How do you feel about facial hair, in general?

I think if I were a guy, I'd take enourmous pride in my mustache. Maybe I'd have a goatee.

Has anyone joined the CDNOW preferred buyers club on Amazon? If so, it says you have to buy 2 cd's a year, are these any CD's on cdnow/amazon or are they on a specific list? If there is a specific list, does anyone have any idea of the CD's on the list? (like any 60's or 70's music?) I really want to join but am afraid it's one of those crappy music clubs that are advertised in magazines.

I have looked on google for the past hour with little to no luck, so I ask you:

1)Do you know any sites that have cute dress patterns?

I have decided that I feel a need to be creative and want to make a little day dress that would go over jeans for tomorrow, I have tons and tons of fabric due to my mom's quilting hobby but I can't find any pattern that isn't dated and/or matronly.

2) Do you ever feel randomly creative? If so what do you do?

This might be a longshot... but I've been looking for a long time. I need a picture that shows a view from a window - any window, as long as the window frame is in the shot.
I found one Collapse ) but I just don't like it. I'd like it to be a nice view of a city/landscape/water...etc.

So...does anyone know where I can find such pictures? :/

What strange noises wake you up at night?

I happen to live directly next to the local zoo, and now that it is getting warmer again, the animals are starting to get NOISY again.
Right now I can hear the owls and monkies talking amongst themselves. When Spring comes in full force, I know my arch nemesis, the peacock, is going to come back. Not to mention the wolves!
Those jerks are LOUD.

I remember a while ago, someone asked a question about a young girl with severe disabilities, who's parents got her all this surgery to stop her growth so they could take care of her better.

I'm giving a debate workshop on parental control over children's bodily integrity, and I wanted to use the case as an example, but I can't for the life of me remember her name, so I can't research it any further.

Does anybody know her name/have any more information so I could try and find stuff myself?

1. I just started reading Anaïs Nin: A Biography by Deirdre Bair. My mother and I are debating how to properly pronounce her name. How do you pronounce it?

My guess is, "Anna-nEes nen (as in rhyming with pen)". Hers is, "Annees nen". Jewel's guess was, "Uh-nie-is nen," right?

2. I have a gift card burning a hole in my wallet and I'm really tired of perusing Amazon.com. What movie should I buy?

For some reason when I actually have money to spend, I can't think of anything that I want. ETA I loathe romantic comedies, but am up for anything else.

have any of you ever been taken to court by a credit card that you owed money to? i just found out that Discover Card is taking me to court. i was very surprised because i don't even owe them that much. maybe like $1000. however, i havent paid anything on it in at least 5 years, but i can probably afford to pay them like $50-$100 a month if they make me, which they probably will. i was just wondering what happens when they take you to court for something like this, so i know what to expect. thanks

1. Do you ever just randomly start singing commercial jingles? Even if you haven't seen that particular commercial in awhile?

YES. I was just putting dishes away and I just sang "Activiaaaaa" from that Dannon commercial about the mom who feels irregular and bloated from too much takeout, so her daughter gives her that activia yogurt that is supposed to help your digestive system.

"O Rly?"

I saw this userpic a little while ago (no idea whose it was) which was a 2 sec video of a baby with its arm outstretched, and it then brings its hands to its chin in a very humerous, dramatic way, so that the baby looks like he's rubbing his chin in thought. Then the words "O RLY?" appear along the bottom.

I swear I right-clicked and saved the userpic to my computer when I saw it, but I can't find it anywhere on my computer. Does anyone know what I mean, and where I can get it? I'm almost 100% certain it was from someone who posted in this community.

it's an inspirationalish story that i think a professor is telling to his students and it's all about the things that are important in life. he has a jar and he puts different things in it such as either golf balls or ping pong balls and sand and i think pebbles?

For the sake of a story I'm writing on a topic I know next to nothing about...

Care to share your experiences/knowledge of heroin use? I'm particularly interested in long-term effects, but anything is good (physical/mental side-effects, etc.). I know I could find information on the internet but I'm after a more first-hand account, I guess.

I work at a shoe store that sells various brands. I'm trying to sign up for one of our vendor's websites {Merrell], but it asks me if I work at a "Merrell Retailer" or a "Merrell Vendor."

I have no idea. Anybody know which it is?

I'm in the market for a hand held audio recorder. You know, like the ones you see high powered executives use. I tend to verbalize my thoughts better then writing them down and I was just wondering if anyone had any good recommendations. I'd like to go digital so as not to mess with the teeny cassettes. I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it, either.

Any suggestions?

Any tips for draining sinuses? I was thinking a real warm cloth on my forehead. Good or not?

1. I was planning on preparing this fruit salsa.  I managed to remember to buy everything EXCEPT the fruit preserves.  Luckily I happen to have a ripe mango sitting in my refrigerator.  Do you think replacing the fruit preserves with a couple tablespoons of mashed mango would taste alright?  The salsa ingredients are:

  • 2 kiwis, peeled and diced
  • 2 Golden Delicious apples - peeled, cored and diced (I'm using Fuji apples)
  • 8 ounces raspberries
  • 1 pound strawberries
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 3 tablespoons fruit preserves, any flavor

What's that movie?

Okay I'm having trouble remembering a movie.

It was out in theatres in the last couple of years. It's about a group of high school kids who decide that the SAT's are unfair and so they break into the school and get the answers...or something like that. I don't think any of them were friends to begin with or anything.

Does anyone know the name of that movie??

***NEVERMIND!! It's been answered =] Thank you!!

1) Is there a cover of Hallelujah with all of Leonard Cohen’s verses?

2) If a person was to donate, say, $50 million to a charity, would it be more beneficial (in purely financial terms) to set up some sort of investment with the money with all of the profits going to the charity, rather than to donate the lump sum? If so, what sort of investment might that involve?

Starting treadmill exercise, any help/tips?

I have been out of shape for too long and I plan on doing something about it. An absent-minded but thoughtful family member ordered a treadmill for me but failed to read that it wasn't electronic. That's alright. I've Googled and found that both work just fine.

So since I haven't had any real exercise in probably 2 years, how can I start using this treadmill?
I worked out today for 30 minutes (5 min. walking, 5 min. running, repeating) and I felt like hell afterward. I pushed myself hard and I felt nauseated and dehydrated afterward. I'm a Diabetic so I think my sugar was way down too because I felt like total crap. I took a shower and felt fine afterward. Better than fine, pretty great.

I don't think that I should work out that hard again tomorrow. My boyfriend said I worked too hard and that I'll just drain myself doing that 5 days out of the week and probably give up altogether.

Should I maybe walk/run on the treadmill for 10 minutes everyday? I Googled and didn't find much. I just found out that you shouldn't eat 3-4 hours before working out (I ate 30 minutes before) and that you shouldn't work out more than 12 hours apart from the next session. I was planning on doing 10 minutes 3 times a day but that's not going to work with the 12 hour thing.

So can anyone give me any tips on what my walking and running regimen should be for a manual treadmill, for someone who is out of shape and hasn't exercised in 2 years?
Please don't just tell me to ask my doctor because I don't have health insurance and don't tell me to go to a gym because I can't afford that rightnow.

Thank you for any help that you can provide.
