The Question Club

OK, my google foo is not working today, need some help.

Dunno if you have ever heard of this, but my class ring is very top heavy (stone and lettering on top, just a small band on bottom). If I spin it with the stone down (it's rounded) it will wobble and force the stone up to the top.

Anyone know the physics behind that? My guess is conservation of momentum and it must be easier for it to stay spinning with the weight at the top, but I was hoping for something more definate :)

Thanks in advance!

Calling all Europeans!  What is a good online resource for buying electronics?  Amazon.co.uk is really expensive and Amazon.fr doesn't have what I am looking for and fnac.com is pricey too.  I'd rather not buy it off amazon.com and ship it to my family and have them ship it to me but right now that seems to be the cheapest means of getting new earphones for my iPod.

a. What celebrities do you mix up?

I swear to god, I cannot tell the difference between Leslie Ann Warren, Sigourney Weaver, and Susan Sarandon. I could tell you which one has been in which movie, but show me a picture, and I would not be able to identify which of them was in it.

b. Are there any music artists you always get mixed up?

I always think that Elvis Costello sings "Little Red Corvette." I do not know why.

Switching Actors/Actresses [Sep. 22nd, 2006|04:56 am]
The Question Club
In Roseanne, they switched the "Becky" character part way through the show with another actress.

In Bewitched, they switched the Darren.

In Fresh Prince, they switched Aunt Viv.

Can you think of any other television series that has switched the actor or actress that played a main role part-way through it's run?

I love playing Snagu & am looking for similar online games -- Suggestions?

"snagu is a scavenger hunt updated for the mobile age. It’s a massively multi-player camera-phone based scavenger hunt, with player generated content and community driven scoring. The game provides the tag and the players find the image wherever they like. Unlike traditional scavenger hunts, there are no right answers - only interesting ones. When photos are submitted, players can go online to vote for their favorite image and determine the winner for each tag..."

Would you consider a green burial?

I heard a piece on NPR last night that Mayor Bloomberg (Bloomburg?) wants to institute a program for low-income people, supported by Newt Gingrich, that would pay people CASH to do the following things:

1) Get prenatal care
2) Finish high school
3) Keep their kids from dropping out of school
4) Get married before they have children.

What do you think of this?
Also, I can't find a source for it anywhere. My google-fu is failing me. If someone could find me a summary of this, I'd appreciate it.

EDIT: Thanks, nectarines! Here's a transcript and audio of the item.

Just curious, what are your thoughts on Prop 86 (a prop on the CA ballot this November)?

Proposition 86: Tax on Cigarettes. Initiative Constitutional Amendment and Statute.
Prop lingo behind the cut.Collapse )

We discussed it last night at the county meeting and opinions were split down the middle on it. Most of the people at the meeting are of the 50-and-up crowd, so I'm curious to hear the thoughts of the younger crowd on this.
Edit: Even if you don't live in California. Suppose this was a measure on a ballot in your state, tell me what you think.

Poll #827718 Would you rather

I would rather....

live to be a spry 110 with no health problems, but be considered ugly and physically unappealing to most people
live to be 85 with no health problems, but have merely average looks. Not bad looking, but a bit on the plain side
live to be only 60 years of age, but be considered by most to be drop-dead gorgeous/handsome

Would you rather be...

super intelligent (genius IQ) but super ugly
average looks with only an average intelligence
Highly attractive looks but below-average intellect

Would you rather be....

very happy with your life but have little to no creativity or sense of humor
of average contentment with just average creative talent and standard sense of humor
quite unhappy with your life, but be considered gifted creatively and deemed hilarious by most people

Would you rather have, for your PRIMARY means of employment, a job...

that pays very well and makes you look important, but have to work 6 days a week and only 1 week of vacation. You have to wear business attire
that pays standard salary and not sound very important, but you only work 5 days a week with 2 weeks paid vacation. You can wear semi-casual attire, no t-shirt or jeans or mini skirts
that pays less than $20,000 per year, but you only work 3 days a week. Dress attire is casual, so whatever you want
that pays $25,000, but you get to work from home. However, the workload would require you to work 4 days a week

Would you rather have...

a beautiful face and perfect hair and teeth but a dumpy body
an unattractive face but a healthy, athletic, hottie body

Would you rather be a ...

vampire: attractive, super powerful all the time and cannot age, but you consume only blood (no more chocolate or pizza) and can never see sunlight again
werewolf. Super powerful, feral and violent one day a month. The rest of the month, you're normal like you are now

Is it better to...

beg for permission and hope you get your way?
act first, and then beg for forgiveness?

Is it worse...

to die and be forgotten
to be die and be historically infamous

I just got back from getting my hair cut/colored from my long-time trusted hair stylist and it's the first time that I've ever hated what she's done with my hair. It's this brassy, loud red that doesn't fit me at all. Is there anything that I can do or do I have to wait it out until I get my hair done again? When is the soonest that I can get it recolored without damaging my hair? Is there any over-the-counter stuff I can buy to lighten it up a bit, or should I just go back to the hair salon? I'm pretty much devestated from this whole ordeal, so thanks for any help! :)

The Question Club

What is the best thing to do in a situation where you're just simply no longer interested in being someone's friend anymore?

Ideally, I'd like to be able to go back to just being aquaintances- where we can still be civil and communicate with each other but I don't really have to give anything to the friendship anymore, if that makes sense.

There are no hard feelings between us, or even good reasons that I feel this way about her, we've just kind of grown apart. I feel like I've matured differently and more so than she has, and there are little things about her that I just find irritating.

She asks me to hang out often, and I don't want to hurt her feelings, so usually I either say that I'm busy, or spend some time with her but keep it as short as possible. But even in these situations I feel like I'd rather be somewhere else than spending time with her. And I get sick of lying all the time, and I don't want it to be obvious that I'm avoiding her.

It would be really really difficult for me to do anything to hurt her feelings- is there any civil and kind way to deal with this situation?

What is the best way to handle this? Have you ever been in a similar situation? What did you do?

Alcohol again. [Sep. 22nd, 2006|06:39 pm]
The Question Club

Wow... A LOT of people don't drink.
Which makes me wonder... why?

Are there alot of latter day saints? methodists? ex-alcoholics?

Why don't you drink?

if you do drink, do you do it because you like the taste, want to get pissed, or some other reason?

& how often do you drink?

I do drink. Alcohol does not taste that nice, especially for the price. It tastes okay if you're drunk, but i don't understand the 'i do it for the taste' people. Then why do you drink it at parties, if it tastes so nice why not have it with your lunch every now & then. Wine is a bit different i suppose.

I don't drink unless i can get off my face. I fear that if i just have a little bit of alcohol i will get addicted. Plus, it's my escapism & i'm not going to ecape down the street, i'm going to the moon.

I drink usually about 3 or 4 times a year. I feel like i'm damaging my body if i do it more than once in two months.

I've had the same homeroom since they were freshmen - they're now seniors. I want to give them each *something* as a graduation present, but I'm at a loss as what to get them.

I don't want to get them just a generic gift, like a picture frame, but I'm not sure what would be meaningful and yet not break my bank.

My husband thinks that I should get a book for each of them - the same book, but besides the cliché book 'Oh, the places you'll go' I can't think of a book.

I'm already thinking of getting them each a card and writing a message.

Did you get a graduation gift from a teacher that you really appriciated? What was it? Any other ideas for me?
