The Question Club
Presently, my roommate and I are living in a two bedroom apartment above a little Italian landlady who speaks not a word of English. The other day, she knocks at the door because she wants to show people our apartment (the lease is up in May). She looks at my roommate, shakes her head, and says "The black people!" and keeps muttering this over and over. She shows the people the apartment, and a little translating tells the students that:
1. Esperia, the landlady, doesn't like a lot of people in the house
2. She likes to know everyone who goes into the apartment
3. She goes to bed at 11 so everyone needs to be in by then
After the people leave, she keeps muttering that expression over and over and shaking her head like they have some nerve.
Roommate and I have no rules. Roommate and I are both white.
Then tonight, roommate and I had friends over, and one friend leaves. Esperia approaches her and tells her, in broken English, that she has the extra rooms to rent out and friend should tell her friends. Esperia then adds "Whites only, no blacks"
Our friend is black.
That just crosses the line with me, and I have absolutely no tolerance for such people. I cannot stand this landlady to begin with, should I report her for renter discrimination? How do I go about doing that?
Have you ever witnessed a similar situation?
