What does "QED" mean?

As in (from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, BBC, 1981):
God: I refuse to prove that I exist, for proof denies faith and without faith I am nothing.
Man: But the Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn't it? It proves that you exist and so therefore you don't. QED
God: I hadn't thought of that...

(not making any statements here, just quoting where I heard QED from so people can tell me what the bloody hell it means. :o) )

[nickibicki]
My sister is doing a triathlon for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. They train her while she fundraises-- $3100 total. She is currently at 89% of her goal, and her fundraising deadline is Friday, April 22.

Would you like to contribute a few dollars towards cancer research by clicking the "DONATE" button on the right-hand side of her donations page?

Have you ever done a triathlon?

Have you or anyone you know suffered from leukemia or another blood-related cancer? If so, your donation could be in their honor, and the survivor/victim's name(s) can go on my sister's race shirts/bracelet. Their training team has many honorary team members who actually fought or are fighting cancer.

Thanks so much!

Can someone please recommend to me some good sites and books on male sexual anatomy and men's studies?

I went on a rant about this on my journal today, I'm sick of the fact I can find out all about my anatomy, empower myself, read about women's studies and feminism, then when I go looking for things on men I find vague information on anatomy usually related to errection problems, gay guides and viagra advertisements. Really, it seems that there are no good sources of information for men on their bodies, men's studies and male empowerment, there is really no point in female liberation unless we are all moving together we are just stuck. Rant over.

I have to do this cause and effect paper.
It could be on causes, or effects or on both.... or one more than the other.

I can do anything, as long as I can research and prove it.
...and I'm thinking I want to do something geeky or otherwise esoteric so my teacher will be vaguley confused.

So what should I do it on?

To those of you that go to the following colleges/universities:

Australia:
Grffith University (specifically Gold Coast campus)
Monash University (Gippsland)

USA:
Columbia
Emerson

What was your experience like there? How's the atmosphere like?

I'm looking for colleges around the world and one of my requirements is that it has a creative, liberal, open, out-of-the-box atmosphere. If someone can run around dressed in faerie wings there and not be kicked out for insanity, that's my sort of place. XD Places that offer independent degree-type programs are cool too.

If you know any other college anywhere that offers such an atmosphere, do share your experiences. I'm looking for colleges that either have Mass Communications (especially Journalism and/or Film & TV), Creative Arts (Creative Writing especially, also Internet Studies and perhaps Theatre), and places where I can combine either one of the above with Social Work. Monash has such a degree (Journalism/Social Work) but I was wondering if anywhere else had something similar.

I'm currently doing my first year of a B.A. in Mass Comm (double major Journalism and FTV) in Limkokwing University College, Cyberjaya, Malaysia. The two Oz unis are affiliated with LUCT, though that's not a requirement.

Thank you :)

1. On the highway this morning (401 in Ontario) I noticed a license plate that was VE3***. I've noticed a bunch of these plates, VE3*** format, and I have no idea what they're about. There's no space in them, and there's got to be some reason behind them. I'm thinking they're some sort of Government VIP and they have those license plates so that cops don't pull them over, but maybe that's just me.

2. Did anyone else go to one of the Bell Canada concerts last night? I wish I got to see Blue Rodeo, but we had the BareNaked Ladies in Toronto. They were still REALLY entertaining :P

Okay, I'm moving to Oregon from Michigan in August of this year and my kitty Zoe is coming with me. She is NOT a good traveller, so my first instinct is to sedate her for the road trip, or at least the majority of it. Has anyone here ever had an experience with this? I read some articles online and most of them say that vets will advise against sedation, but I just wanted to find out if anyone here had gone on a road trip with a cat, sedated or not., and how it went.

Thanks!

college algebra question [Apr. 19th, 2005|12:06 pm]
The Question Club

[mood |confusedconfused]

No, I'm not asking you to do my homework for me. I am, however, very confused and any clarification is more than welcome.

The scene: college algebra. Not that big of a deal, I've seen most of this before and I understand a good chunk of it. We're on logarithms, specifically logarithmic identities. The directions read: "Use logarithmic identities to expand each expression, rewriting it as a sum, different, or multiple of logarithms." For example, log (a*b) = log a + log b, log (a/b) = log a - log b, and log a^p = p log a. I'm solid on that, but this isn't working out:

ln (e/7x^3) = 1 - ln 7 - 3 ln x

I get the - ln 7 and - 3 ln x part, but where on earth are they getting the 1 at the beginning? My answer to that would be ln e - ln 7 - 3 ln x. How does ln e = 1?

Only a few college related questions [Apr. 19th, 2005|02:07 pm]

[neglectedecho]
[mood |excitedexcited]

Ok, so Im moving to College in August and assume that I am being the typical ignorant freshman..

1) Ok, I know that classes open tomorrow, but what about for freshman? Im not sure how the school works (Southern Utah University) Ive heard some schools basically just hand you a premade schedule with some core classes your first semester. and there's orientation where we meet with a counselour etc, but I might be going to that 3 days before classes start.
How could I go about finding out? their website is impossible...Who should I call? What should I say?

2) For anyone who went to school out of state, did you get a new license place, and/or license for that state? Im moving cross country, aside from a very short visit I have no plans of ever coming back to Michigan.

3) My friend and I requested our rooms back in September. I have a apartment (its a nice ass dorm) that I share with 6 other girls. there's a kitchen, living room, two bathrooms, and then 5 bedrooms. 4 of which are private and one is shared. It was originally thought my friend and I were going to share but along the way I switched to a private. I want the whole dorm, roomie experience but..If I want to cry, or be on the phone or just get away from someone, I want to be able to close my own door. What would you do? How would you break it to your friend?

4) As I said Im driving cross country in August, and Im turning it into a road trip of sorts. I kinda want to hit up amusement parks on the way. So anyone know of any between Michigan and Southern Utah (we'll say Vegas for simplicity) I know in Sandusky Ohio theres Cedar Pointe, which Im definetly going to. But otherwise all I know is in CA or FL.

So...The naming ritual begins. We're thinking about 'Fizzgig.' Now I'm thinking maybe "Pope" might actually be an okay name. Any ideas?

What do you do when you have a friend who asks you for advice and then you give it to her and she keeps going back and forth on the right answer, and you keep giving her advice again and again and she is starting to get annoying but you don't want to come off as a bitch?

The situation is she really likes this guy but is old-fashioned & doesn't want to be the one to ask him out and she doesn't want to lose their friendship. I have told her she should go for it or she'll keep wondering all the time and if she lets him go then he'll always be the perfect guy that she never got and she'll be haunted by him for the rest of her life. (I got really dramatic after the first hundred times of telling her to go for it hoping it would work, but it didn't.) She keeps saying that she worries about losing her friendship but she obviously wants to be more than friends with him.

Blech, high school drama. WHY WASN'T I BORN A FEW YEARS EARLIER? I want college now.

[unger_pants]
[mood |curiouscurioso]
[music |Everything Sucks - MxPx]

So I am burning a CD and want to get a lot of good songs on it, so any suggestions?

Here is the CD I already burnt...

In Love With The 80's - Relient K
Behind These Hazel Eyes - Kelly Carkson
She Will Be Loved - Maroon 5
Boulevard of Broken Songs - Green Day vs. Oasis
Sadie Hawkins Dance - Relient K
Superman - Goldfinger
Invisible - Clay Aiken
Californication - RHCP (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
Otherside - RHCP
Flavor of the Week - American Hi-Fi
Breaking the Habit - Linkin Park
Toxic - Britney Spears
Pretty Fly (For a White Guy) - The Offspring
My Happy Ending - Avril Lavigne
This Love - Maroon 5
Since U Been Gone - Kelly Ckarlson
Wake Me Up When September Ends - Green Day
Girl All The Bad Guys Want - Bowling For Soup
Ocean Avenue - Yellowcard
Drive - Incubus
Numb - Linkin Park

So I already have all of those songs on a CD and thus do not need to put them on this CD.

And the potential list for this CD is...

Eleanor - Low Millions
Complicated - Avril Lavigne
Everything Sucks - MxPx
Wonderwall - Oasis
All The Small Things - Blink182
Pressing On - Relient K
Everytime - Britney Spears
What's My Age Again - Blink182
Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous - Good Charlotte
Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Green Day
When You're Around - Relient K
1985 - Bowling For Soup
Get Low - Lil' Jon ft. The Eastside Boys
Can't Stop - RHCP
Marilyn Manson Ate My Girlfriend - Relient K
Ch-Check It Out - Beastie Boys
Almost - Bowling For Soup
Harder to Breate - Maroon 5
Suck My Kiss - RHCP
I Just Wanna Live - Good Charlotte
In the End - Linkin Park

With all of that, I have 7 & 1/2 minutes left, so 2 or 3 more songs could go on there, and I am still debating some of the songs on that list so more room could open up. Any good songs that I need that I'm missing, or that you think because I like these songs I would like others?

Here's the problem: it's not a, er, very good time of the month for me to be skipping showers (if you ladies out there know what I mean). Should I try to suffer through an icy shower, or do you think I'll be fine?

religious responses to Jesus Christ Superstar [Apr. 19th, 2005|10:11 pm]

[mood |confusedconfused]

I go to a fairly religious college... it's not forced on the students, but it's definitely got a Baptist leaning. So in music appreciation today, the instructor mentioned Jesus Christ Superstar as part of musical theater and all of a sudden the whole class fell silent and I felt this air of "it is such a shame someone actually had the nerve to create that" settle over everybody all of a sudden. Even the instructor took on the notion of it being something not worthy of recognition in the Christian faith.

I've heard of the musical and I know people who are fairly devout Christians who have performed for it, but I don't know what it's about or why it's such a big deal for those of the Christian faith. Why did the class react the way they did? What's so "wrong" about it?

why are there ads for perscription drugs on TV? I trust my doctor to prescribe whichever medicine is best for me and to know about the options. I would not go and say, Oh i saw this ad on tv so you should prescribe this med for me. My doctor obviously knows more. I would simply say, here are the symptoms and let him do the rest. Why dont the drug companies advertise to the doctors instead of the general public? it seems like a waste of money. if your doctor doesn't think a med is best for you, he's not going to prescribe it just because you saw an ad on tv.
