I know I'm not the only one here who's mortally terrified of what could happen in the next four years. I also know this isn't a political journal, but I'm still curious about your opinions:

What scares you the most about this year's elections, candidates, or platforms, and why?

Random insomniac [Aug. 10th, 2004|05:45 am]

Well I'm not an insomniac, but I go through phases where I just can't sleep. Drugs won't help, because I'm on Prozac, which has averse affects when taken with most other drugs. Can anyone suggest natural sleep-inducing methods? I'll try anything from the glass of milk and banana to praying to voodoo gods, but I just wanna have mental insurance for when I'm facing another sleepless night.

I've recently downloaded Bearshare and have gone on a music downloading rampage. So can anyone recommend songs/artists? I like a wide range of artists but my favourites include
*Green Day
*Rammstein
*Muse
*Sissor Sisters

So can anyone recommend any bands/songs?

Edit: I have Broadband so files sizes aren't too much of a problem

Still planning my birthday party and I have yet another question. This time, regarding the birthday cake/dessert. My favorite cake ever is hot yellow cake with melting chocolate frosting. Yum. But now my doctor is waggling her finger at me, telling me to not eat chocolate. (Evil, I know.) And I'm not a huge fan of cheesecake, in case you were going to suggest that.

My question is... What kind of desserts would you serve in place of a birthday cake? And remember, no chocolate! (Not even white chocolate.)

There is a job that has been on this university's website forever. I am guessing not many people have applied because the pay they have it at is rediculously low.

I can do the job, but wouldn't take it at the pay they are offering (22,000-23,500. I would want at least 26,000).

Should I bother?

turning mpegs and avis to dvd? [Aug. 10th, 2004|06:47 pm]
The Question Club

[tripoverthings]
does anyone know of a good, free program that will allow me to make dvds from my mpeg and avi files?  (preferably if I can mix the two, as I've got the entire first season of Joan of Arcadia and almost 3 full seasons of Queer as Folk taking up space on my hard drive)

My computer came with Sonic MyDVD but I don't find it very user friendly and for now all I've been able to do is burn data discs -- but I really want to be able to play this stuff with my dvd player, not just my computer.

Any suggestions?

Help me decipher my sleep clinic results! They tell me I have "idiopathic insomnia" which is really annoying because that's just a fancy way of saying they don't know what my problem is. Here are some of the results I understand and some questions I have:

I was in bed for 422 minutes, during which I slept for 232 of them.
I had only one period of REM sleep, which lasted 11 minutes. How many REM cycles am I supposed to have and for how long?
It took 376 minutes to get to the REM sleep. (I read on WebMD that I'm supposed to get there in 60-90 minutes.)
My respiratory disturbances were normal, thank goodness.
I had 93 arousals (7 respiratory and 86 spontaneous). That can't be normal. I only remember waking up once. I know that we wake up several times a night without realizing it but I think 93 times is a tad excessive...What is a normal number of arousals?
I spent 74% of my sleep time in Stage 2 sleep.
It took 88 minutes to fall asleep but 162 minutes to actually sleep for more than 10 minutes.
They mention "epochs" but I'm not sure what they mean. They said I had 882 epochs. What does this mean?
They said I had 72 stage shifts. Normal? Abnormal?
The test type was a PSG.

Any help?

For those of you in Australia and the UK, do you usually refer to movies as "movies," or are there preferred words, such as "films"?

i am attempting to log on to a chat room to no avail. i type in my screen name and get a screen saying "Just click the Chat button below to get the list of rooms!", but there is no button. i do, however, see at the bottom of the screen where it says "loading java applet" and, eventually, "loading java applet failed".

what does this mean?

Does anyone know what causes this?

diets [Aug. 10th, 2004|10:59 pm]

[mood |curiouscurious]

After much deliberation, I have decided to adopt a strict carnivorous diet with herbivoric tendencies. This means that I find it morally offensive and barbaric to eat anything which might upset my stomach. When I go out to restaurants now, I must ask if my meal contains anything on my forbidden list below. If the waiter or cook has touched any of these items, I shall be forced to ask that he or she change his or her gloves before preparing my food.

Forbidden list for the carnivorous diet with herbivoric tendencies:
rocks
dirt
assorted poisonous snakes and spiders
anything containing the words "do not eat"
telephone books

Vitamin supplements can compensate for the lack of dirt and 'phone books.

So my question...
Are there any plain, ordinary meat eaters left? To those of you who aren't, why vegan (or whatever)?
