Dental malpractice.

Has anyone ever sued a doctor or a dentist, in particular, for malpractice?
Has it been successful?
Was it worth it?

.About four months ago, I went to a dentist near my college because I was in terrible pain (turned out I needed a root canal).
Not having dental insurance, all the expenses would be cash and being a broke college student, and not in contact with my family, I was pretty much screwed and basically gave them all the money I had saved.
The dentist did a root canal, and two fillings (on adjoining front teeth = $600).  The root canal was another $1,000, without a crown because I couldn't afford another grand. Said I absolutely had to get a crown within a year.
Trying to make this short:
Went to a new dentist today. Teeth hurting.  He took one look at my teeth and asked who did them last because the job is terrible. The fillings need to be completely redone. There's a void in the filling. She also took off too much enamel, leaving the tooth really sensitive.  OH, And the tooth that needs a crown... well the last dentist filed/cut it down so much that it's absolutely impossible to put a crown on it. So I just have to wait for it to break and either get it pulled or hope that it breaks in a way that it can be reconstructed. But essentially the last woman was still going to charge me for a crown which would've have inevitably fallen off. So now, I'm broke and need even more money to fix the mess she made.

I don't know if there's anyone here that knows about dentistry, or law, or both if I'm super lucky, but does it sound like there's anything I can do at this point? If I want to pursue legal action, how would I go about doing that?
What would YOU do in this situation?
Just write a horribly sarcastic thank you note to the dentist? Get a lawyer? Spread the word about her crappiness as a doctor, since all the students in the area go to her, in an attempt to spare others this crap? Anything?
Thanks for any help.
