evening out candles

Is there a way to level out a candle that only seems to burn down the middle, and not evenly across the entire surface? I understand that in general, if you have a pillar candle, you are supposed to keep it lit long enough so that it burns evenly and stays flat across the top.  But if that didn't happen, and you're left with a candle that is high on the sides and substantially lower in the center, is there a good method to even it out, so to speak, after the fact?  I've had some success with pressing the sides in toward the center, but I only seem to be able to do that if the sides aren't too thick. Any other suggestions out there?
