Pretending / Face-Blindness

1. Do you ever pretend to be someone else or something else when completing a task (or doing something in general)?

2. Do you have prosopagnosia (aka face blindness)? (You can take a test here!)

ETA: 3. Does anyone have Microsoft Outlook Express? How do you reply to LJ entries by e-mail? Everytime I press the spacebar in the reply section nothing happens.

1. Yes. This morning I have to work on a lot of school stuff. Ever since I can remember my dad, when he had to work, would open the window or door to outside, turn on baroque music (if it's the morning), get himself a cup of hot coffee, and get to it. He's my good-at-working idol so I think, "if this works for him maybe it'll work for me!"

Sometimes I pretend I'm a real lawyer who is working on work because otherwise it seems so dreary and pointless I'll never get it done. But if I think "I'm reading this for my client!" then I'll be more likely to pay attention while reading. :)

2. I discovered I am "face blind" two years ago when I kept not recognizing my classmates when they were not in class. I'd run into them at the library or the parking garage and if they looked like they knew me, I'd try to figure out where I knew them from. I'd usually say, "Are you in the law school?" And they'd say something like, "I SIT RIGHT BEHIND YOU!!"

I usually remember people by their hair, shape, and the "sense" I get from them as I approach -- but all of these things require me to have significantly 'noticed' them (thought about them), and being an introvert I don't do that as much. :)  It's kind of like memorizing for a test. I remember X because he has a scar under his right cheek, or I find my husband in the store by looking for grey sneakers. (I try to remember what colors the person I'm with is wearing.)

The funny thing? When I was taking a physiological psychology class years ago we studied this! I thought, "Oh, those poor people who are face blind! How ever do they cope?!" hehe.. it's not too bad. :)  Just lots of guesswork!
