left over mucus

The last sunday in June I got a cold. I've been very mucus ridden since. All the other aspects of it are gone I just can't seem to get rid of the mucus. It's at it's worst in the morning, and at night when I'm trying to sleep. It feels like there's a lot of it just hanging around in my throat, I can't cough it up until it travels down to my lungs. I know 1.5 weeks isn't that long to have a cold, but it just seems like it isn't going to end. How can I get rid of the mucus? Is there anything I can do/take to dry it up? Should I be worried?

I took Mucinex once but I couldn't really tell if it helped. I just took one and will take another tomorrow morning.

I also posted this in ask_a_nurse but figured I'd get quicker responses here.
