The ethics of cat-sitting

I'm cat-sitting one of my friend's two cats for a week. Every other day, I drive about 10-20 minutes to feed them, refill their water, clean out their litter box, and take in her mail. I like cats, so I don't mind doing it, but of course it does take time out of my day.

When she texted me to ask if I could do it, she said she'd pay me $40. One night, after she and her husband fed my boyfriend and I dinner at her house, she handed me the money. My boyfriend was appalled and refused to take it. When we were alone, he argued that we don't need the money and that she is working two part-time jobs to make enough money, while her husband serves in the Coast Guard, although they are making enough to not live paycheck to paycheck.

They left the $40 on the counter for us to take, insisting that we take it.

What are the ethics of cat-sitting for a friend? Would you take the $40 or leave it?
