My family (my husband and our son) moved into an apartment complex in May. We realized the apartments upstairs from us are hardwood floors and ours is carpeted. We live in the basement. When we moved in I remarked on the noise to the management team and they claimed that our apartment had been vacant for a couple months and that the people who lived upstairs were just unaware we were moving in - they would notify them and they would be sensitive to the noise levels. I have never lived in an apartment before now and realize that noise is something that happens when people live above you - but at all hours of the night?
The first night here we were absolutely shocked, the neighbors upstairs (3 kids and a mother) were SO loud. We heard the two boys screaming at each other at 2:45am, throwing things, loud booms like they were body slamming the floor and the mother opening the door to their room and yelling at them "THIS ENDS NOW".
My husband talked to the mother on two separate occasions. Once right after the first night and then about a month later when the noise at night would be ridiculously bad at ALL hours. I'd be woken up at 3:00am a couple times a week by these assholes upstairs. To make matters worse, it seems like the woman is not in good health, has issues walking and is completely not in control of her kids. I heard the older son say to her one day outside "calm the fuck down". She doesn't work, she is at home ALL day EVERY day it seems. I have no idea what their story is but it's clear that they have a lot of issues.
So, we have aired our issues with them directly. One time about 2 months later I left a note on their door reminding them that 11-7 are "quiet hours" and that the noise levels were extreme and disturbing and we need them to keep it down. I have a 7 year old child that although sleeps like a rock, wakes up to go to the bathroom and sometimes would not be able to fall back asleep due to it.
Then we got the front office involved via e-mails. When school started the kids would come home from school slam the door so hard the fixtures in my apartment would shake and then proceed to scream and yell at each other and wrestle/run around the apartment. The woman at the front office did the least she could get away with, claiming she went into their apartment and made sure they had it 80% carpeted, talked to them, etc. I've talked to her twice now about the issue and nothing seems to have changed. It was a little better for a while but not by much.
On and off we've been dealing with the noise and now that the kids are out of school for winter break they are at it again - 12:25-1:30am last night, on Christmas Eve they were obnoxiously moving furniture across the floor and doing GOD knows what. I've resorted to banging on the ceiling VERY loudly to shut them up. And most of the time, it works. But I am literally at the end of my rope.
We are trying to move out of this stupid place and buy a house but our lease isn't up until May. What would you do next? It's affecting my sleep. I wake up all the time feeling exhausted and like I haven't slept at all (I'm a light sleeper as it is). Ear plugs aren't a solution - I need to be able to hear an alarm in the morning to wake myself up, get my kid off to school, etc. I just don't even really know what I can do.
