What Just Happened Here?

My SO of three years unexpectedly broke up with me just before Christmas... by voicemail! I didn't see it coming. Everything was fine until he left me a message saying he'd just lost his job and was leaving the area to go live with his father full time and he was sorry he won't be seeing me. Said he enjoyed being with me, I was very important to him, yadda yadda.

So, wtf? People don't break up face to face anymore? Has this ever happened to you? What did you do?
