Why do you think U.S. fiction from 1980 to 2010 is important to literary and cultural history, and why should it be read?

What do you think they'll teach us if we read them 100 years from now in 2113?

Edit: Sorry if this sounds like a homework question! :S I've just been reading a lot and trying to convince my friends it's not just "something to pass the time", but can actually teach us.
