sleeping pills

Does anyone here take Ambien and/or Sonata? I've been looking online, but I'm only finding drug facts and stories of people abusing it, not first-hand accounts of people taking it as prescribed and I'd like to hear other people's experiences with the meds.

I've been on Ambien for awhile (OTC meds make me too groggy) and my doctor recently added Sonata for me to take if I wake up in the middle of the night. I don't like the Sonata. It makes me feel weird and seems to keep me up (though that could just be me being up...). I told my doctor it kept me up, but he thinks I was imagining it and my symptoms were from the Ambien wearing off since Sonata is a sedative hypnotic. The weird thing is, I've noticed if I can't fall asleep and don't keep my eyes closed, I hallucinate a little. It doesn't scare me as it's very mild, but obviously hallucinating regularly from a med isn't good. It also makes me feel a little high, like I'd rather stay awake and pet my cat than fall back asleep, lol. I don't want to feel that way in the middle of the night and I need to sleep. :/ I love Ambien; it puts me to sleep quickly (or it used to, doesn't seem to work as well lately), doesn't make me feel high or out of it, and I feel rested in the morning. We talked about me trying the new XR formula, but we both worried it'd make me groggy in the morning (which is why he gave me Sonata instead). I read about people abusing the 'Z' drugs out of curiosity and it seems in high doses it can cause hallucinations and make you feel high, but I'm not taking more than I should, I'm not a small woman, and I should have some cross-tolerance from other meds I take. It doesn't seem to matter if I've taken Ambien as well (sometimes taking Ambien when I go to bed and Sonata around 3-4 am). I've never had some of the crazy side effects like sleep-eating or -driving (which had it happen wouldn't have surprised me because I do crazy shit on my sleep when not on meds).

Anyway... experiences with either drug? Has anyone else had such odd side effects with Sonata?
