What does this sentence MEAN!?!

Ok ... "yet whilst wealth enervates men, and women live, as it were, by their personal charms, how can we expect them to discharge those ennobling duties which equally require exertion and self-denial?"

That sentence is from an article from 1792, in response to the way women were treated. This writer thinks that in order for women to gain virtue, they must separate and become independant of men. However, this sentence really confuses me. Any thoughts as to what the last part means? Which duties is the writer referring to?
