You have a roommate and she has 2 cats. One cat has been missing for days and she is very concerned. If you were out one day and found (ETA: definitive!) evidence that the cat had been killed -- hit by a car, eaten by a coyote, etc -- would you tell your roommate? It would definitely upset her. Is it better to know the grisly truth, or is it better to go on wondering where the cat ended up, assuming it's probably dead but maybe retaining some hope that it's still out there and just found a new home or something?

*this is not entirely my situation btw. My roommate's cat is missing but I haven't found any trace of her, and I was just wondering how I might handle it if I did. There are many coyotes in our area.
