My old landlord owes me $965. He is refusing to give back any of it. Part of that is my security deposit. Part of it is my last month's rent. I paid twice. He is refusing to recognize my July subletter and my July subletter is going along with it because she doesn't want to pay for July either. So basically. He is putting my rent money towards my subletter's August rent (she moved in and signed a lease after me). Don't even ask. It's a really confusing and muddled situation. They are both very bad people. And I no longer trust people any more. Because they will screw you and take your money. He is saying my security deposit is going towards the water bill and late fees and that I owe him $100 a month. WTF?
I have been very upset about the situation for months. The situation is so confusing that taking legal action could be difficult. It would be basically my word against his. My aunt is a landlord and knows about landlord tenant law and says that he doesn't have a case and I should threaten to take him to small claims court and then do it if he doesn't pay me back. I have a friend who is in her 3rd year of law school but she says she doesn't know too much about landlord/tenant law, however maybe some of her law school friends do and would be able to help me write a threatening letter full of legal-ese to him.
However part of me thinks that for my sanity I should just let this go and move on. I've been holding on to all of this stress and anger. My landlord is a very bad man. He has lied to me so much and sent me a letter full of bullshit and threatening to report me to some tenants association that DOESN'T EVEN EXIST. He is so stubborn, he'd probably take me to court if I wrote him a letter, and find a way to take even MORE money from me. Maybe I'm better off cutting my losses and running at this point. But it upsets me that people can get away with things like this! I am completely broke right now and could use the money, but at this point, it's no longer about the money.
