My of my friends (sadly) don't read LJ anymore anyway :(

I have to agree with you there, sadly. Facebook seems to provide the instant gratification that people seem to crave these days. Anyway, I'm glad LJ is still here, and I hope the management take note of the poll results.

i just turned it off. won't that prevent it from happening?

[info]surrey_sucks

September 2 2010, 00:25:39 UTC 1 year ago

That prevents you from having all of your posts linked to your accounts. That doesn't prevent other people from linking their comments left in your journal to their accounts.

It might bother me if I actually wrote in any of my journals anymore, but I don't.

If I didn't trust my friends not to randomly repost my information, they wouldn't be on my friendslist to begin with.

[info]twisted_times

September 2 2010, 17:59:04 UTC 1 year ago

I trust my friends likewise, but some people are in positions that they simply cannot afford even the slightest possibility of this occurring.

The very best explanation of why this shouldn't occur is in this LJ post from someone who (a) is a psychiatrist, (b) incarcerated felons for substance abuse and mental illnesses, who (c) could end up being as likely to stalk YOU as her...

I don't really fit in any of these categories. I think it's an inevitable idea, as everyone is adding "repost to FB and Twitter" buttons to pretty much everything now. I trust the people who read my friends-locked entries to not repost my shit to Facebook, but also, a link back to my locked post doesn't really scare me that much; I try to live anyway as though my LJ could be suddenly leaked, since, well, it could.

I do get the big deal, though, and I understand why people are upset, and I will even pat them on the head if anyone is upset around me in person. But I really just file it under "increasing social networkizing of the Internet" along with all of Facebook's biweekly privacy outrages.

What is this about?

[info]technocratic

September 2 2010, 00:31:08 UTC 1 year ago

I'm not too worried about it. I trust my flist, but if anyone cross-posted anything (especially something sensitive), they wouldn't be on my flist anymore.

[info]surrey_sucks

September 2 2010, 00:32:07 UTC 1 year ago

If one person crossposts any of my content without explicit permission, even a public entry, they are off my friends list, and BANNED from commenting.

[info]plasticpepper

September 2 2010, 00:32:12 UTC 1 year ago

I'm not really concerned about my privacy because there's no way any of my friends would think having LJ and Facebook linked made any sense anyway, but I still said yes because I think it's dumb that they didn't see the potential for privacy issues.

[info]pullmystrings

September 2 2010, 00:33:40 UTC 1 year ago

I don't personally feel like I'm too affected by it but I think it is a stupid idea and could cause a lot of issues.

[info]narwhalhugs

September 2 2010, 00:35:11 UTC 1 year ago

i guess i'm not quite understanding how this works.

so if someone crossposts a comment that they left on one of my locked entries, then people clicking on their crosspost will be able to read my entry?

[info]pullmystrings

September 2 2010, 00:38:06 UTC 1 year ago

No, they can read that person's comment and click on the link to your (locked) entry

[info]eagon

September 2 2010, 00:35:51 UTC 1 year ago

I don't care. LJ is pretty much a dead platform by now anyway.

[info]surrey_sucks

September 2 2010, 00:42:35 UTC 1 year ago

There is still the issue of having my LJ name linked, and why should I delete comments made in my posts? The damage is already done if someone crosslinks MY posts.

[info]lintelsoups

September 2 2010, 00:41:53 UTC 1 year ago

It doesn't bother me since most of my journal is public and the parts that aren't no one cares about really. Especially not on facebook or twitter. And I'm not about to re-post anything on facebook or twitter.

I see why this would piss off other people. I know a lot of people on livejournal use this place as a way to vent and they want to keep the public out of their lives. I thought the whole point of F-locking entries was that you could keep stuff between you and your friends. oh well.

[info]lunasol

September 2 2010, 01:04:44 UTC 1 year ago

I feel like if you're worried about your friends posting sensitive information to facebook and twitter, you should probably rethink your flist. I can't imagine that doing it by accident would be too easy, at least not without realizing right away.

[info]surrey_sucks

September 2 2010, 01:06:43 UTC 1 year ago

What if someone not on your flist comments to your public entry, and they happen to have the option "crosspost to FB"? Sure, the content wasn't personal since it was public, but I still don't want people crossposting MY stuff to THEIR FB. It's still a privacy concern.

Also, what if you have some asshole 'friend' on your LJ, and don't yet realize it?

Complete breach of security. Shit like this makes me feel betrayed. Perhaps they felt it was alright since FB already does that on a massive level with the tabs they keep on their users. Not cool.

I don't understand why they don't make it an option for us to turn off. There are undoubtedly some people who would like to use this feature, but I want to be able to disable people from cross-linking their comments on my journal.
