My mom said that's what they were called when she was younger. She's 48.
They are delicious, hard as hell to crack though.
this, except my mum's 46.
yep, mine too, only she's 49.
She told me my kid was eating brazil nuts and I asked which ones they were (since it was a bag of mixed nuts) and she said the big brown ones. Nigger toes.
I was all like *jawdrop* WHAT DID YOU SAY??
she replied with "that's what they were called when I was a kid".
like that makes it okay.
What the fuck are Brazil nuts? They look disgusting.
Also, no. Ugh.
Take this back. Brazil Nuts are amazing.
You mean to tell me you don't have some old man in your family that constantly buys cans of mixed nuts? You're missing out, bb.
They look like poo droppings.
I had a similar reaction.
Yes. It's common in the south.
My mother's family is generations of Southerners and I have never heard this term. Guess I'm lucky.
Yep, I have. That's what my grams calls 'em. (She's a very old-fashioned Southern black woman.)
I think they look like poo nuggets.
I've never even heard of Brazil nuts to begin with.
you're missing something delicious.
Compared to other nuts, what do they taste like?
It's odd to think of it this way, but the first thing that came to mind was "creamy". They're thick and white and it's like they're hearty. A lighter flavored nut. Nothing like peanuts but slightly similar to almonds only without the skin...
If I had one right now, I'd eat it and describe it but... don't. My kid ate the last ones:-(
Interesting...I'll have to give them a try some time.
Yes. I remember reading a huge conversation about this somewhere on LJ. I've never personally heard anyone call them "nigger toes," though.
My pawpaw calls my freckles "nigger spots."

Wow, that's a pretty big contrast from what my mom used to tell me they were. "Kisses from the sun."~*
lol yes, that's what they were called growing up, or creamy seeds
there was also this story that if you ate too many of them, you wouldn't wake up the next morning
Omg. what? remind me not to eat a lot of them.
I think I heard that on LJ awhile go, but otherwise, no. They taste nasty, though.
Yes, that's what my mother (a 60 year old black woman who grew up in the South) calls them. My friends' jaws pretty much hit the floor when I tell them that, haha.
Yes. My mom's family calls them that all the time.
Back in the day. Yes.
Too many are posionous.
I saw that on HOUSE.
My boyfriends mom and grandma have said it before, to see if we had heard it.
Odd that people have only mentioned this phenomena on the mom's side. Or woman family members anyway. Heh.
I remember there was a postcard on Postsecret that mentioned that
I have never heard that except on the intarwebz.
yeah I have. My ex told me about that.
WTF? No I've never heard that.
I had a similar reaction to hearing, "Eeny, meeny, miny, moe, Catch a nigger by the toe." though.
My dad has mentioned that they used to call them nigger toes Back In The Day. He doesn't any more, though.
My mom has also admitted to calling licorice babies "nigger babies" in her younger days.
i thought that is what they were called for many years, until i learned that nigger was not PC when i was in elementary school.
my grandma calls them nigger toes, and she is the one who taught me what they were.
NO, NOT AT ALL. What the shit?
I think we've had this exact question here before.
My grandmother did that once, and I had pretty much the same reaction.
Seriously, WHAT THE FUCK?
My friend called them that once. My jaw dropped.
