If you were planning on getting a rather large tattoo, how much would you have saved up before you go in and start seriously working out the details with the tattoo artist?

I am working on saving up for a quarter or a half sleeve with a lot of color and don't know how soon I should go in to start this whole shebang. I've been in and met the shop owner and I've seen their work both in process and after healing.
