Do they have to be American?
Great! Nick Cave will be the central musical guest then. Also performing are Tom Waits, David Bowie, Prince, and Mykki Blanco for the afterparty lol.
A week or so ago, I would say Daft Punk.
Then I recently was introduced to the Mountain Goats.
Now I'm thinking about what a mashup between them would be like.
I love the Mountain Goats!
good list! - you went old school, and I greatly approve. :)
cant i just have him do everything? i dont need other acts to get in his way.
ETA: instead of 5 bands, the 5 bowies songs would be
rock n' roll with me

Indigo Girls, Barenaked Ladies, Imagine Dragons, and I'd see if New Edition were willing to get back together to play the ball. I'd leave the 5th slot open for players "to be named later".
Yo La Tengo
Radiohead, but they wouldn't play anything from their latest album
Boards of Canada, in a rare public appearance
Depeche Mode, just so I could see them live, FINALLY
i didnt even think about using it as a way to get bands to make a rare public appearance. i mean, how could they say no to the president?!?
The Grateful Dead (featuring Jerry Garcia)
Getting myself elected President will be the hard part. If I can do that, raising a bunch of musicians from the grave will be a piece of cake.
These aren't necessarily my favorite bands, but they would set my administration off on the right foot.
Florence and the Machine
Billy Joel (I have a list of songs I would make him play too.)
OMG Siouxsie Sioux would be my first choice too. Then I would probably have any remaining Doors members, Lana Del Rey (she's super patriotic, okay), Britney Spears (she's America's sweetheart), and Interpol (purely because I love them and I'm sure they'd play something beautiful and dramatic).
