the most popular gifts at the one I went to were party games like Dirty Minds / Cards Against Humanity etc.
Toilet paper with 10 bucks in the cardboard hole.
but, what if they used the toilet paper and threw away the cardboard :[
the one I went to this year the rule was no alcohol, no gift cards. I didn't even know what to do, I always give booze. luckily I wasn't the only person who panicked and brought nothing so I just spectated haha.
wow, that was a toughie. :o
Sorry! or Trouble! the boardgames.
I don't know what a White Elephant exchange is though.
I hate you. I came on here to say exactly that.
Haha I actually got one at a white elephant exchange last year.
Booze, survival kits, traveler's mug, restaurant gift card
Unique kitchen gadgets. Pizza stone.
Best thing I ever got from a white elephant was a Godzilla toy and a bottle of Jack Daniels.
Best thing I ever brought to a white elephant was that Sarah Palin book.
anything from the "as seen on tv" section
Last one I went to, I brought individual serving size bottles of wine (one half drunk...oops) and some really trashy romance novels. The most popular gift was a neck massager shaped like a frog.
a magic 8 ball always comes to mind
I've only been to one White Elephant gift exchange, which was last Christmas. Everyone except one person brought legit gifts except for one guy who put in some kind of tennis trophy he won in the 80s. I thought he was being an asshole but then I read online that the game is usually with gag gifts? I don't know, but I got a really pretty mug.
If you want to put in a legit gift, mugs, coffee beans, a cheapy gift card, etc... I think they're supposed to be cheap but I guess that depends on the budget set.

Lottery tickets, some five or 20 dollar ones
In the one I host, the rule is you can't buy anything for the exchange. Everything is random stuff from the house, regifts, or something you've made. This year, the best gifts were a knitted Cthulu, a pair of matched rocket birdhouses (representing USA & USSR), a bag of soap, a bunch of NIB toys, some books, a box of food. Some of the weird gifts were an (unused, in package) vibrator, a shake weight, a Twilight movie board game.
I guess it depends on whether you want your gift to be stolen or mocked.
something from a favorite team? like a Cowboys blanket or whatever.
games...board, yard, etc.
