How do you deal with really annoying people that you can't avoid? I realize I am irrationally irritable with certain people and I can be civil with them, but I don't know how to let go of my irritation...

Do you deal with any particularly annoying people on a daily basis?

If I can't avoid them, then I jump in with both feet and sit next to them, initiate a conversation, put in some time, and then gtf away.

I have one coworker I can't stand (she's a loudmouth complainer about EVERY GODDAMN THING). I just try not to be around her as much as possible, and when we do have to interact it's work-only on my end. She'll try to engage me and I just nod, smile, and "mmhmm" and then go find something else to do so she can't stick around and try to socialize. When she leaves I just take a deep breath, imagine her falling down some stairs, and smile to myself and carry on.

The one time I really let her get to me was on Thanksgiving. She kept going ON and ON about how much it sucked that she had to be at work, and how much it sucked she was missing her family dinner, and did I think I would be able to pick up her slack if she just left a little bit early, because being at work on Thanksgiving sucked for her so much?

Really? Tell me more about being at work on Thanksgiving and missing your family dinner. No idea what that must have been like. I vented my frustration by furtively texting my husband and sister and complaining about her. It mostly made me feel worse, though. I recommend the "falling down stairs" imagery and the deep breaths.

my one coworker is super annoying, very loud, a complainer, and makes annoying sounds about every 5 minutes

i wear headphones and listen to loud music all day. if she wants to talk to me, she has to come over where i can see her so that i take the earphones out.

i also try to focus on her good qualities, whenever i can find them. if we can find something to mutually laugh about, she is less irritating for a while
