One of my online friends' husband lost his job (was one of the Hostess workers).

They had been struggling with him being unemployed until he got this job so they are both really upset. I'd like to send a care package to her to cheer her up, and I am wondering, what kinds of things should I include in it?

Anything but Twinkies. :(

In all seriousness though, I'd probably just send gift cards to like Walmart, or something, so they can buy food if they need to.

You can! If you get a gift card at Safeway, they have an option to buy a card that will work at any of their sister stores.

If you have their address, you can Google map it and look at the grocery stores in the area.

This. Also, try to see if you can get one at your bank for free. Usually the ones at the store charge about $10 to purchase one.

So it's not all practical, you could also send a DVD and snacks (or a gift cert for movie theaters/fandango and snacks) for a movie night. If they have kids, a game or puzzle for them might be nice. Hell, a game for the adults might be nice. A bottle of booze if that's something they do. But I agree with sending a grocery store/visa gift card.

Oh, this is always a nice treat, actually. I had a pair of free tickets to a movie theater I gave to a friend of mine who was down on his luck (lots of drama in his family) so he could take his wife and get away from it for a night. He got to go see a movie he really wanted, and he was really excited about it, and it wasn't a super huge cost.
