[manicgummibear]
My fiance's psychology professor said that acid flashbacks are possible and so are "drunk flashbacks". Do you agree with any of this? Do you think a person can flashback to an altered mental state they experienced while under the influence?

You mean that they recall dumb shit they did when under the influence?

Like suddenly you feel drunk or like you're tripping again out of the blue years later

Oh...I have never heard of that before nor has that ever happen to me. I only feel drunk when I have been drinking or I drink apple juice that is way past the expiration date.

LMAO @ the apple juice

Yeah, I have never had a flashback to anything I've taken I think she's nuts.

Are there any studies on that theory? It does seem weird...

Yes, I do think it can happen.

Here's a good paper on it with LSD: http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/lsd/lsd_info3.shtml The short bit is that it's experienced by a small but substantial portion of long term users of LSD.

With alcohol it happens with long-term users who just stopped drinking. I can believe it happens because I've seen the other shit that happens with sudden cessation of a long-term alcohol habit and there's a whole slew of wacky shit that happens.

And really to say it's only long-term folks is a glib summary. There's mention of some possible genetic component accounting for why some people have it, some people have it only after a shitton of use, and some people never experience it.

Yes, but the question was simply whether or not it's possible, not even probable. It's definitely possible, even with single-use in the case of LSD. And on the other end, it is very probable in the case of long-term use of alcohol.

I think it's possible, but I've been drunk hundreds of times, and dropped acid at least 50 times. I've never had a flashback from either.

As I understand it, the flashbacks are decades later.

Well, I've got four years to go before it hits two decades from the time I started doing those kinds of things...so we'll see, I guess! lol

As far as I know, there is no physiological explanation for acid flashbacks. Contrary to myth, acid does not get trapped in your fat or spinal fluid. It is completely metabolized and excreted fairly quickly. I think it's more that after having tripped on acid, things that people would normally pay no attention to start reminding them of being on acid. One of the most memorable things about acid is the way patterns and textures seem to move; everything looks like this illusion. The same thing can happen when you're tired or fatigued, but if you've never dropped acid you wouldn't think anything of it.

I've heard of alcohol causing people to have flashbacks of traumatic experiences, but I've never heard of sober people having flashbacks to being drunk.

Look up wet-brain/Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. It become a semantic issue then as to whether or not that would constitute an alcohol-related "flashback", but really the symptoms mirror being drunk but when sober.

This makes a lot of sense. Back in middle/high school I noticed at some point that after track practice, if I looked at the door mat by the locker room, it kinda looked like quick sand. Freaked me out but figured I was just tired. Then after having tripped once or twice, I once noticed a similar effect with a "pattern" that was faint in a carpet at the mall, but seemed to me to be moving like I was tripping, if I looked real hard. At the time, it bothered me a little because I worried about flashbacks.... but now it totally makes sense!

I definitely believe flashbacks are possible. I'm sober now, but used drugs and alcohol for a good number of years. I still feel like I'm high sometimes, and it's terrifying. It's a right pain in the ass actually. It's a very disturbing and distracting experience.

I don't know about drunk flashbacks, but when my hubby and I first started dating he could pop his neck and he would have mini trips. It eventually stopped.

Acid flashbacks are totally real and documented, as are other types of flashbacks. You can also get flashbacks to trauma, I have experienced those myself, and acid flashbacks.

I once had pot cookies that turned out to be laced with acid, and I went on a really really horrible trip that included vomiting, time skipping backwards and forwards, shaking uncontrollably, and my heart racing. Oh and thoughts of suicide. I did have a few flashbacks once or twice after, they stopped a few years afterwards though, thank god.

Wet brain is after you have been drinking a lot for a long time from what I've seen.

I do think that you can flashback from an acid trip. Again, I bet it's after using it a lot over a long period of time. Drugs make your brain and body do different stuff than without it. I do know that people who use drugs a lot over a period of time get realllllly stupid and/or crazy. Which is probably not the same as a flashback.

I have heard of acid flashbacks. One of my psychology professors worked with people who abused substances in their past and one of her clients/patients/whatever had an acid flashback and thought his parents were trying to kill him, so he shoved a pencil into his nose to try to kill himself. :(
