Mercury does enter retrograde motion relative to the Earth, yes, and exerts a miniscule gravitational pull on it. Aside from that and pieces of its atmosphere being sandblasted toward us occasionally by solar wind, It does nothing else but spin around, jealous that Earth got life and it (apparently) didn't.

Who knows, maybe I can get a new computer out of it. "Wow dear, I don't know how the computer got so smashed up. But I heard that Mercury being in retrograde can pick the damn things up and hurl them against a wall, so that has to have been it..."

I have a colleague who spouts this shit all the time. It's as true as the rest of astrology I suppose.
