Apples to Apples, Bananagrams, Balderdash, Cranium
I really enjoy Risk, but that usually takes up a whole evening and often ends up with someone getting metaphorically fucked in the ass.
I can't play Risk without hating someone by the end.
Scrabble, jenga. We made our own penalties for jenga though haha
lots of fun~
Endeavor, Puerto Rico, Citadels, and Pandemic. Pandemic is really frustrating though, because it's a cooperative game, with all the players against the game itself, and the game nearly always wins. Endeavor and Citadels are great when you're cranky and you want to fuck people over.
Second everything but Endeavor as I've never played it LOLZ
Robo Rally, Through the Desert, Power Grid, Galaxy Trucker, Summoner Wars, King of Tokyo.
I just played King of Tokyo, I think. Dice, right?
Yes. Dice and giant robo-bunnies.
Apples to Apples, Clue, Life and Guess Who.
monopoly - but we dont have a "winner" we always stop the game when the first person goes bankrupt. makes for a different strategy (ie you dont have to win, just survive) but this way it keeps the game short and avoid bitter fights. people cant seem to be lighthearted about monopoly.
Apples to Apples is the best board game ever invented
If you have stamina, Risk is the second best
apples to apples, the logo game, infinite city, ticket to ride, munchkin... i could go all day with this lol!
Apples to Apples and Candyland (don't judge)
For a game night with friends I think Pictionary is best.

Settlers of Catan
Dominion is more a card game than a board game, but I second this suggestion
Apples to Apples, Cranium, anything trivia-related (especially Scene It games).
I like Arkham Horror, Scrabble, Quelf, Cranium, Sequence, any card game.... I also play more strategy ones that my husband prefers like Settlers of Catan, Discworld, and Game of Thrones.
There's a Discworld game? As in Terry Pratchett?
Yes! It is strategy based (unless you're Vimes, which imo is the best card to get haha) with cards to draw.
Well of course Vimes is gonna be the best!
Yes... it's Martin Wallace saying "Look! I can do a light fluffy game too!"
Gloom for the story-telling.
Clue, Apples to Apples, anything by Cheapass Games.
Betrayal at House on the Hill is one of my gaming groups all time favourites.
B@HotH was a long-awaited reprint for many of my friends... good game.
Apples to Apples, Scrabble and Taboo are my favorites.
I played that with my housemates and it's actually quite fun. Very strategic!

things in a box, hands down. you don't even really need the game itself if you wanna just take the time to make up some phrase cards beforehand
I love this idea. I'd play scrabble, snakes and ladders, trivial pursuit, and monopoly. I've enver played Cluedo but that sounds like fun.
Settlers of Catan and Arkham Horror.

two great games that you only need paper and writing utensils to play telephone pictionary and sentence rolls
What's Yours Like?, Namesake, Cards Against Humanity, Bohnanza, Qwirkle

Too many to name... Brass, Indonesia, Wealth of Nations, Through the Ages, Caylus, and Age of Steam are all good heavy games. Small World, Kingsburg, Puerto Rico, Power Grid, Imperial, Agricola, and At the Gates of Loyang are good mid-weight games. 7 Wonders hasn't been mentioned and deserves to be in the mid-light range... it's probably the best game in its weight class in a few years. Niagara is another good medium-light game. Lighter games and party games have been well-covered in other comments, but I'll add Dixit to the list.
settlers of catan
but that can take ages, so i like to play this when we want a short game:
